Vivian sat in the plush armchair, her fingers drumming against the armrest as she stared out the window. The sprawling grounds of the Blackwood Estate stretched out before her, a seemingly endless expanse of perfectly manicured gardens and looming, shadowed trees.

She had spent the better part of the day exploring her new, unwelcome accommodations, searching for any clues that might shed light on the mysteries that lurked within these walls. But so far, her efforts had been fruitless.

Vivian sighed, frustration building within her. Liam Blackwood was playing a dangerous game, and she was trapped in the middle of it. Whatever secrets he was hiding, they ran far deeper than a simple inheritance dispute.

A soft knock at the door drew her attention, and Vivian tensed, half-expecting to see Liam's smug face. Instead, a timid-looking maid entered, carrying a tray of tea and biscuits.

"Forgive me, Miss Caldwell," the maid said, her voice barely above a whisper. "Mr. Blackwood sent me to see that you were...comfortable."

Vivian arched a brow, her suspicions immediately piqued. "Thank you, but I'm quite capable of making my own arrangements."

The maid hesitated, her eyes darting around the room nervously. "I...I understand, miss. But Mr. Blackwood insists that you be well taken.
