Liam is ignoring Niall. Niall can tell and as much as he would like to pretend it doesn't hurt, it does.

His been trying to get in contact with Liam, sending him text which Liam ignores, coming by the house but Liam's never home it's like he knows that Niall's coming by.

When he tries to speak to Liam at school he quickly makes up an excuse to get away from Niall, and Niall's left standing heartbroken because the boy his in love with won't talk to him.

He doesn't know if they're fighting or not and its making him antsy.

Niall prides himself in being the chill one, the calm one, the one that goes with the flow, but something feels off kilter and he's scared. It wouldn't be the first time they've fought but it doesn't make it any less uncomfortable.

To Liam:

are we okay?

he sends Liam, and immediately tugs his lower lip into his mouth. He shouldn't be nervous to text his own boyfriend.

The reply comes an hour later.

Liam:

I don't know, are we?

Niall's stomach turns over. He doesn't want to jump to conclusions, but he can practically hear it in Liam's voice, condescending, angry tone and all.

Liam, he types, and then pauses, fingers hovering over the screen. He mutters a bit to himself before continuing.

To Liam:

Can I call you?

This time, Liam doesn't answer.

"Damn it," says Niall to the empty room.

He calls Liam anyway and gets the answering machine. He hangs up and tries again, and then again, starting to get angry. This answers it, then. They are fighting, and Niall feels a little sick with it.

He starts pacing the room, wracking his brain for things he might have done that could've made Liam upset with him. He comes up with nothing.

Finally, he decides to text Liam again.

To Liam:

I can't read your mind. Please just tell me why you're upset.

They don't usually talk like this, in full sentences with perfect grammar and punctuation. Niall stumbles into his bed and squeezes his eyes shut, waiting for a reply that doesn't come.

The next morning, he wakes up with his phone still clutched in his hand.

**

It ends up being a week of passive aggression and dull hurt, and it culminates into Niall yelling into Liam's voicemail, leaving message after message full of snide remarks and phrases mucked up with tears.

It's harsh and too much and Niall regrets it immediately, frustration tempering into exhaustion. He finishes the last one with an apology.

"You didn't deserve that," he says into the phone, "I'm sorry, I just wish you'd talk to me. Please, just- call me."

There's no answer. The vice in Niall's chest constricts that little bit tighter.

**

Niall is woken up by the sound of his alarm going off, he frowns and rubs at his blurry eyes which are red from the constant crying his been doing.

He groans and turns to his side hitting the snooze button on his alarm and turning back bed.

His not up for school today, not wanting to be ignored once again by the one person he loves most. It's been a full week since he last spoke to Liam and Niall's been going insane trying to figure out what it is he has done wrong that Liam is ignoring him.
