"This is an emergency evacuation message. A Kaiju attack has been detected in our area. For your safety, please follow these instructions from Ultraforce."
Mr. Sato and Mr. Akashe exchange a knowing glance. Their time of fun was cut short, and they had to leave.
"Don't go," pleads Ken.
"Akio," comes Ria's voice from his watch. "The message has been sent out, and the best course has been chosen for you."
Ultraman, Japan's hero, stands ready, but he isn’t alone. Behind him are his best friends who operate Ultraforce, handling the critical tasks that he can't manage alone.
Together, they help save the city countless times.
Mom, the Genius Hacker, works behind the scenes, orchestrating what most would consider luck. As the eyes in the sky, her job is to ensure no civilians come into contact with the battlefield. From hacking traffic systems to redirecting or halting traffic completely, orchestrating the evacuation of entire city blocks, to providing vital intel on defeating the Kaiju, she minimizes collateral damage. Thanks to her, there have been no deaths in 723 days.
Then there's my dad, the first responder. Equipped with a specially crafted super bike capable of reaching triple the speed of the latest race cars, he shines the legendary beacon that warns those who haven’t caught the electronic alerts and those in the red zones – the most dangerous areas. He helps evacuate people to safer grounds and reaches places giant hands simply cannot. He is our firefighter and soldier, saving lives caught in the crossfire, those in the front row of the main event: Ultraman versus the Kaiju.
The man of the hour, better known as Ultraman, shoulders the greatest task of all – facing the mighty Kaiju head-on. He battles these colossal threats, defeating them and sending them back where they came from.
Sadly, Ultraman can't save everyone. That’s too great a task for one man alone. But together, their chances are a solid 98.2% guaranteed success rate to save the city each and every time, despite how hopeless it may look at times.
Saving the city and saving the people in the biggest and smallest ways possible. Ultraman and his Ultraforce.
"Please stay," Ken asks his father.
Amari takes it as a cue to ask her father too. "Dad, do you have to go too?" she asks, biting back her sadness, though it shines from her bright brown eyes.
"Amari, I'm sorry. Ultraman needs us as much as we need him," her dad says softly.
He gives her a gentle smile, though his heart breaks as he slowly slips his hand from her pleading grip, causing her hand to fall loosely to her side, cold and empty.
Amari says no more as she bites her lip, putting on her brave face.
"You promise?" asks Ken to his father. Amari takes in the furrow of his brow, knowing it was easy to make promises but much harder to keep them. She hoped he'd promise to return, with her father.
"Emico, can you protect Amari for me?" her father asks. Emico nods, "Of course." He gives Ken a glance, and he too looks as heartbroken as Amari.
As civilians, Mom is the lead researcher in Kaiju studies. Her groundbreaking work has earned her two Nobel Prizes and global admiration. My dad, well... he's just a stay-at-home dad. Considering his double life, you'd think he’d work in a field more aligned with his passions, but as he once said, "That would make it too easy for the bad guys to figure out." He often says his greatest achievement was winning my mother’s love, claiming it's the biggest reward known to man.
He loves her deeply; I see it every day. It's a giant's kind of love, and Mom loves him just as much. They love me too, I know that... and they love saving others.
Sometimes, though, I just wish their love for me was greater than their love for the city.
Suddenly, a helicopter engulfed in orange flames spirals across the glass panel. The calm scene turns into one of chaos as it explodes, causing the ground to tremble and the lights to blacken.
Her dad kisses her on the head, not having the words to comfort her.
"Akio," Hayao calls for Amari's dad as they rush to the exit. "I'll rush over to help Dr. Onda."
Their determined voices grow distant, leaving mere echoes for the children to cling to.
"He didn't promise," realizes Amari as the lingering hope flickers weakly.
A young Ken reaches over to hold Amari's hand as their parents rush off. He gently squeezes her once-empty hand, giving her warmth, as she turns to him with glossy eyes. His eyes hold the same hurt as her own. Mrs. Sato rests her hands on both their shoulders in silent support.
From the foggy smoke outside shines a blue light, and out comes Ultraman... shortly followed by the piercing screech of Gigantron.
If I had known that was the last time I would see my dad, I would never have let him go.
