She had one task, which had spiraled into a trillion other side quests.
Get to the Southside. It was the center of the city and the hub of most of the electrical flows. Gaining control there meant gaining control of the city. It was her best chance to calm the chaos of such a large crowd in a matter of seconds—the closest she would come to doing anything Ultraforce-like.
"Mari, pull up their feed," she instructed, annoyance spilling into her steps as she continued moving towards the Southside.
"Of course, Dr. Akashe," Mari complied, linking to the feed and displaying it for Amari.
"Scramble all jets. Kill Gigantron. And retrieve the package," Dr. Onda's command was clear and merciless.
Amari leaped onto another roof. "You merciless son of a—"
"Language, Dr. Akashe," Mari interjected.
"I wasn't going to swear," Amari spat.
"Of course," Mari responded with a hint of sarcasm.
Anger coursed through her, fueled by Dr. Onda's reckless plans that had thrown her and many others into chaos. His actions were irresponsible, possibly costing countless lives.
"Mari, call Ken Sato," she instructed, barely pulling herself onto the next roof and leaning over to catch her breath.
"Calling Ken Sato," Mari confirmed.
She finally connected to the system. "Ken, don't let them get hold of that package," she said urgently, relief flooding her as she established the link.
"Ari?" he asked, concern evident in his voice as he raced off after Gigantron. Meanwhile, Mari sent her the summarized information gathered on the KDF.
"You okay?" Ken stressed, looking around as Ultraman.
"Focus, Ken. I'm alright," she whispered, despite her protesting limbs. His worry brought a small smile to her face.
Just hours ago, they had been so close, in each other's arms, worry-free. Now they were saving the world—what a way to go about a day.
"Ken, I need you to listen closely. Don't let the KDF get that package. Whatever is in there, it's important enough for them to kill Gigantron over. Be careful, alright?"
"Got it," Ken said with determination. Suddenly, Gigantron grabbed the package, flying into the sky with Ultraman right behind.
It seemed like forever, but finally, she stood before the cell tower. Removing the cap, she began rearranging wires. She had her golden-rimmed glasses on, her hair neatly tied back. The soft glow from the glow stick illuminated her surroundings, casting a gentle light.
"Mari, record this voiceover and broadcast it over the city speakers," she instructed, determination driving her actions.
"Of course, Dr. Akashe," Mari responded promptly.
Suddenly, all lights in the city went dark, replaced by pixelated arrows guiding people away from danger zones. Credit to Mari's artistic work.
"This is an emergency live broadcast. Ultraforce is currently assisting civilians of all kinds. You may identify them as they possess glow sticks. Ultraman is in control of the situation with the Kaiju no longer in the city premises."
Hearing this, the people stilled. Finally realizing the danger had passed, they began to ease away, hesitantly moving out of cramped spaces and back to the ground. The injured and needy were helped up and off the rooftops.
Amidst this, pixelated versions of an Ultraman-inspired icon emerged, directing people to safety with precision. It was a cutting-edge software system they were developing, proving its worth in the chaos.
The pixelated Ultraman figure guided Hina back to her mother, offering a reassuring wink that spoke volumes. Hina recognized them instantly, returning a wink of her own.
"We did it, Mari," she smiled.
"Yes, we did, Dr. Akashe," Mari chimed, displaying pixelated fireworks in celebration on Amari's phone.
As she turned back to the sky, her gaze followed the race between Ken and Gigantron. But before she had a second to process the sight of the launched missiles, explosions went off.
Her blood ran cold.
Her heart pounded wildly, rising up her throat and rendering her unable to utter a single word. A cold sweat overwhelmed her body, numbing her to everything else.
The world went eerily mute. Not even the sound of her own labored breathing was audible, making the sight of Ken and Gigantron falling into the sea all the more vivid.
As they crashed into the sea, flashes of her father's death filled her mind.
In the midst of her silent panic, Mari's soothing voice broke through. "Dr. Akashe, focus on my voice. Breathe with me. In... and out. Slow and steady."
"Breathe," she urged herself, her voice strained with emotion. But she couldn't seem to draw a breath.
"Breathe."
But she couldn't, she just couldn't.
