The sun was just beginning to rise, casting a warm golden glow over the city as volunteers gathered in the main square for the charity event. The recent Kaiju attack had left a trail of destruction, and today, the community had come together to clear the debris and begin the process of rebuilding.
With Mina babysitting Emi and a hologram of Amari set up to help, Ken and Amari had the whole day to themselves. Ken hadn't expected a charity event when Amari mentioned they'd be going out for fun.
A large banner reading "Rebuild and Renew Charity Drive" hung over the entrance to the makeshift headquarters, along with the "#ultra" QR code plastered everywhere. Tables were set up with water bottles, snacks, and first-aid kits, manned by volunteers ready to assist in any way they could. Children were given brightly colored gloves and small trash bags to help pick up litter, their faces lit with excitement at being part of something important.
Volunteers bustled about, wearing bright yellow vests with reflective stripes. The sound of heavy machinery and the chatter of workers filled the air, blending with the distant hum of city life trying to return to normalcy.
Amari and Ken arrived early, wearing matching white t-shirts emblazoned with the event’s logo, "Rebuild Hope." Amari wore a sturdy pair of boots and jeans, while Ken opted for cargo pants and a fitted shirt, the muscles in his arms rippling as he rolled up his sleeves in preparation for the hard work ahead.
A cheer went up from the volunteers as the couple was recognized. Most were excited about being in their presence, while a few gave surprised and shocked looks to Ken. Ken half expected to receive stink eyes and sneers due to his latest poor baseball performance, but most were too surprised to do so.
"Chin up, Kenji, it only gets better," Amari smiled.
"And why are we here?" he asked, his voice tinged with frustration due to his seemingly free day being used so early.
"Your city needs you... Not just as a mighty giant," she smiled with a shrug. "And consider this us time, away from the house." She placed a construction hat on his head.
Ken's lips thinned as he looked at her. He knew this woman had played her cards right to get him here and had another hand he just wasn't sure about. It was Amari, plotting away.
"Fine," he gruffed, bringing a smile to Amari's face, who kissed him on the cheek. That simple kiss melted away his frustrations in a soft sigh.
During that, the event coordinator stepped onto a makeshift stage, microphone in hand, and on cue, "Let’s give a big hand to our special guests, Amari Akashe and Ken Sato, for joining us today!”
Amari smiled warmly, waving at the crowd, while Ken gave a confident nod, his demeanor calm despite the slight anxious beating of his heart.
His latest baseball performance didn't leave him with the best public image, and he was certain he'd receive some hate of some kind.
His hand intertwined with Amari's, whose thumb gently stroked his hand in silent reassurance.
"Thank you all for being here," Amari began, her voice clear and steady as she addressed the gathered crowd. "Together, we can rebuild our city stronger than ever. Every piece of debris we move, every brick we lay, is a step towards healing."
Ken stepped forward, his voice carrying a tone of determination. "We've faced these challenges before, and we'll face them again..." he repeated the words Mina prepared for him, as if his own. Though with the anxiousness, his memory of the words slipped. Amari gave his hand a small squeeze. 'I'm here.'
"But today... we stand united, not just as a community... but as a family. Let's get to work and show everyone what we can achieve when we come together."
A loud cheer erupted, and with it, the beginning of the charity event. Amari and Ken joined the volunteers, rolling up their sleeves to begin the arduous task of clearing debris. They worked side by side with others, lifting broken pieces of concrete, sorting through the rubble for salvageable materials, and providing support where needed.
Amari's scientific expertise came in handy as she directed the proper disposal of hazardous materials, ensuring the safety of everyone involved. Her meticulous nature and attention to detail were invaluable, and she moved with a sense of purpose, her eyes scanning the area for anything that required immediate attention.
Ken, on the other hand, used his physical strength to its fullest, lifting and carrying heavy loads that others struggled with. His efforts didn't go unnoticed, especially by the women, though he barely paid attention since his eyes always glanced over to Amari. His great efforts were a way to impress her. He considered it a win when he eventually caught her checking him out.
