A girl, perhaps my age, stood there in a shapeless grey smock that could barely conceal her developing curves. Honey blonde hair spilled from the coarse fabric hood partially obscuring her face.

My brow furrowed in confusion. Surely no Feminine Deviant dared infiltrate Academy grounds, not unless she wished to be...

"Father?" I asked warily, sizing up the strange girl and his reproachful scowl.

"This is Adeline," he growled. "A member of the Civic Obedience Minders' custody detail. She's been temporarily assigned to shadow us and evaluate your dedication to the New Order's ways."

I eyed Adeline dubiously. Her downcast gaze and slouching posture did little to project authority or virtue. And that hair all but poured from its paltry confinement like liquid gold...

"Let's proceed," Father intoned, wheeling toward the outer gates. Adeline plodded meekly behind us while I lingered in contemplation.

My thoughts remained fastened upon the strange girl all through the austere family meal and Father's habitual rebuke of my "mediocre" achievements. I retired with questions gnawing my mind.

Who was this Adeline truly? What secrets did her haunting grey eyes keep hidden?

I knew finding answers could mean severe disciplinary repercussions. Yet my curiosity blazed ever brighter, urging me toward paths long left untrodden...

The next morning greeted me with another shock. Adeline sat inscrutable at Father's side while we broke our regimen fast.

"As Mother is currently carrying out her Procreation Duties, Adeline will be assisting with domestic governance," Father explained, his tone making clear any protest wouldn't be brooked.

At the Academy, her presence lingered like a specter dogging my every move. Those unfathomable pale eyes forever watching, weighing, considering. I held my composure through combat drills and the afternoon scholastic examinations, driven by the foreign weight of her scrutiny.

My chance for reprieve came during twilight drills in the old grounds behind the main campus. Few ventured through the overgrown maze of crumbling stonework and statuary from times long past. The perfect spot to escape prying eyes, I mused as I took the familiar trail through the tangled brush.

The old monastery library awaited, its shadowy turrets and arched windows beckoning through the foliage. The forbidden haven called to me more powerfully with each passing day, promising answers barred from my regimented existence.

I threw a furtive look over my shoulder before slipping between the ruined doors and into that sanctuary's cloistered halls. Towering bookshelves formed an endless labyrinth of knowledge lost to our age - or so I'd been endlessly warned in lectures.

But could the wise scribes and poets of the past truly threaten us as the teachings claimed? My gloved hand traced the ancient leather spines as I wandered, calloused fingertips tingling with the sense of worlds just waiting to unfurl before me.

A scuffed volume caught my eye - withered and foxed, yet vibrant somehow in this dreary tomb. I plucked it from the shelf and turned it over, breath catching at the title archaic lettering.

"Be not afraid..." I murmured, gazing upon the wizened cover. My heart began thudding in my ears as I cracked open the crisp vellum leaves, a dense thicket of alien words and elegant script sprawling before my eyes

My finger traced the strange language, each line and character becoming a revelation unto itself. It felt less like reading and more like some higher knowledge catalytically infusing into my mind with burning clarity...

"Good evening, Numbered One. Finding your studies stimulating?"
