Mia and Hyun found themselves in the same biology class. As usual, Mia chose a seat at the back, while Hyun sat a few rows ahead.

"Alright, pair up for the lab," the teacher announced.

Hyun turned around, making eye contact with Mia. "Want to be lab partners?"

Mia hesitated but nodded, figuring it would be easier to manage the rumors if they were in a structured environment.

As they set up their experiment, Hyun tried to break the ice. "So, do you like biology?"

"It's fine," Mia replied curtly, focusing on her work.

Hyun wasn't deterred. "You're always so serious. Ever thought about having some fun?"

"Fun doesn't pay the bills," Mia retorted, echoing her earlier sentiment to Lily.

Hyun looked thoughtful. "Why do you hate boys so much?"

Mia stiffened. "I don't want to talk about it."

"Fair enough," Hyun said gently. "But just so you know, not all guys are bad."

Mia didn't respond, her mind flashing back to her father walking out on her and her mom. She shook the memory away, focusing on the task at hand.

Despite the awkward start, they completed the lab with efficiency. Hyun's easy-going nature contrasted sharply with Mia's guarded demeanor, but he didn't push her further. His curiosity was piqued, though, and he silently resolved to understand her better.

As they finished up, Hyun looked at Mia. "Thanks for partnering with me. Maybe we can be friends?"

Mia gave him a cold look. "No. I don't need friends."

Hyun's smile faltered, but he nodded. "Alright. But the offer stands."

Mia walked away; her heart heavy. Hyun's persistence and kindness were unexpected, and she wasn't sure how to handle it. Her past had taught her to be wary, and she couldn't afford to let her guard down.

The encounter left both of them with more questions than answers, but it was a start. And sometimes, that's all it takes.
