Mia paced the hallway, her thoughts a whirlwind of anger and frustration. She had to confront Emily, the source of the rumors. She spotted Emily near the lockers, surrounded by her usual group of friends. Taking a deep breath, Mia marched over.
"Emily," Mia called out, her voice steady but icy.
Emily turned, a smirk forming on her lips. "Well, if it isn't Mia. What do you want?"
"You know exactly what I want," Mia snapped. "Why are you spreading lies about me and Hyun?"
Emily shrugged, her smile widening. "Lies? I just told people what I saw. You and Hyun looked pretty cozy together."
Mia's fists clenched at her sides. "We were studying. The science teacher asked me to help him catch up."
"Sure, Mia," Emily said with a mocking laugh. "Everyone believes that."
Mia stepped closer, her eyes blazing with anger. "Do you have any idea what you've done? These rumors are hurting both of us."
Emily raised an eyebrow, her tone condescending. "Oh, come on. It's just a bit of gossip. No big deal."
"No big deal?" Mia echoed, her voice rising. "You've turned the whole school against me! You think it's fun to ruin someone's reputation?"
Emily's friends giggled, but Emily herself remained unfazed. "If you can't handle a little attention, maybe you should keep a lower profile."
Emily's friends exchanged knowing glances, their lips forming exaggerated "Oooooooooh"s in a synchronized mockery of Mia. They burst into laughter, their amusement dripping with disdain and mockery, adding fuel to Mia's simmering anger.
Mia felt her anger boiling over. "This isn't about attention, Emily. This is about lies. You've made my life miserable because you're bored."
Emily rolled her eyes. "Whatever, Mia. Get over it."
Mia's vision blurred with tears of frustration and hurt. She thought of her father. The rumors, the taunting—it all felt too familiar, a painful reminder of how people could be so cruel and indifferent.
"You're pathetic, Emily," Mia said, her voice shaking. "Spreading rumors because you have nothing better to do. I won't let you ruin my life."
Emily's smirk faltered for a moment, but she quickly recovered. "Good luck with that, Mia."
Mia turned on her heel and walked away, her heart pounding. She needed to stay strong, to fight back against the lies. But the confrontation had left her feeling raw and exposed. She found a quiet corner and sank to the floor, hugging her knees to her chest.
As she sat there, Hyun approached cautiously. "Mia, are you okay?"
Mia wiped her eyes, looking up at him. "No, Hyun. I'm not okay. Emily doesn't care about the damage she's causing. She just enjoys the drama."
Hyun sat down beside her, his presence comforting. "We'll find a way to stop this. Together."
Mia nodded, taking a deep breath. "Thanks, Hyun. I just... I can't believe how cruel people can be."
"I know," Hyun said softly. "But we'll get through this. I promise."
Mia leaned her head against the wall, feeling the weight of the rumors and her past pressing down on her. She glanced up at Hyun, hesitating for a moment. "You know," she began cautiously, "sometimes I wonder if people are just waiting for me to mess up. Like... like they expect it."
Hyun listened quietly; his expression filled with empathy. "You're stronger than you think, Mia. Don't let them get to you."
Mia managed a small smile, grateful for his understanding. "Thanks, Hyun. I needed to hear that."
"We'll figure this out," Hyun reassured her, his voice steady. "And we'll make sure everyone knows the truth."
With Hyun's support, Mia felt a glimmer of hope. She wasn't going to let Emily or anyone else ruin her life. Together, they would clear their names and put an end to the hurtful rumors.
