Ryo sat at the back of the classroom, gazing out of the window as the morning sun bathed the academy grounds in a warm, golden light. His mind drifted, not focusing on the lesson being taught. Despite his attempts to live a normal life, his past and his powers were always at the back of his mind.

"Ryo, are you even paying attention?" Akira's voice jolted him from his thoughts.

"Yeah, sorry," Ryo replied, giving his friend a sheepish smile. Akira was his closest friend at the academy, a fellow student with the ability to manipulate shadows. Though not as powerful as the elemental gods, Akira's abilities were still impressive and he was always eager to learn and improve.

"You're such a mystery, Ryo," Akira said with a grin. "Sometimes I wonder if you're secretly a superhero or something."

Ryo chuckled. "If only it were that simple."

The bell rang, signaling the end of the class. Students began to pack up their things, chatting excitedly about the upcoming school competition where they would showcase their special powers. It was an event that always stirred a sense of rivalry and excitement among the students.

As Ryo and Akira walked out of the classroom, they were joined by Tatsuo, Ryo's younger brother. Tatsuo was a bundle of energy and enthusiasm, with the powerful abilities of a dragon. However, his powers came at a cost, driving him to madness if used excessively.

"Hey, Ryo, Akira!" Tatsuo greeted them with a wide smile. "Did you hear? The competition is going to be intense this year. I'm going to give it my all!"

"You better be careful, Tatsuo," Ryo warned, his protective nature kicking in. "Don't push yourself too hard."

Tatsuo nodded, though his excitement was hard to contain. "I know, I know. But I've got to prove myself!"

As they walked through the academy halls, they passed groups of students practicing their abilities. Some were manipulating elements, while others showcased various unique powers. The atmosphere was charged with anticipation.

In the courtyard, they spotted Yumi, a talented student known for her exceptional abilities. She was practicing her techniques, her concentration evident on her face. Ryo watched her for a moment, feeling a pang of admiration.

"Yumi's really something, isn't she?" Akira remarked, noticing Ryo's gaze.

"Yeah," Ryo agreed, snapping out of his reverie. "She's amazing."

As they continued their way, they encountered various teachers and students, each engrossed in their preparations for the competition. The academy was a bustling place, filled with energy and excitement.

"Hey, Ryo," a voice called out. It was Mr. Tanaka, their homeroom teacher. "Are you ready for the competition? I expect great things from you and your friends."

"We'll do our best, Mr. Tanaka," Ryo replied politely.

The day passed in a blur of classes and practice sessions. Ryo, Akira, and Tatsuo trained together, honing their skills and strategizing for the upcoming event. Despite the normalcy of their routine, Ryo couldn't shake the feeling that something was brewing, something that would disrupt their lives once again.

As evening approached, they headed back to their dormitory. The academy provided accommodations for students, fostering a sense of community and camaraderie.

"I'm starving," Tatsuo declared as they entered their shared room. "Let's get something to eat."

"Sounds like a plan," Akira agreed. "I'm beat after all that training."

They made their way to the dining hall, where the aroma of food filled the air. Students gathered in groups, sharing stories and laughter. It was moments like these that made Ryo appreciate the semblance of normal life he had found at the academy.

After dinner, they returned to their room. Tatsuo quickly fell asleep, exhausted from the day's activities. Ryo sat by the window, staring at the moonlit sky. His thoughts were a jumble of memories and worries about the future.

"You okay, Ryo?" Akira asked, breaking the silence.

"Yeah, just thinking," Ryo replied with a sigh. "Sometimes it's hard to shake off the past."

Akira nodded, understanding his friend's burden. "Whatever it is, you don't have to face it alone. We've got your back."

Ryo smiled, feeling a sense of gratitude. "Thanks, Akira. That means a lot."

As the night wore on, Ryo finally lay down to sleep, his mind still restless. The competition loomed ahead, and with it, the possibility of revealing more about himself than he intended. But for now, he had his friends and his brother by his side, and that gave him a sense of comfort.

The academy was more than just a place of learning; it was a sanctuary where he could forge bonds and find solace. Whatever challenges lay ahead, Ryo knew he wouldn't face them alone.
