"Mum!"
A child's voice pierced through the chaos, the desperate yell barely audible over the cacophony of panicked screams. The child was pushed to the ground, their small frame vulnerable amidst the throng of fleeing people. Without hesitation, Amari darted towards them, pulling the child to her side.
"I've got you," she whispered, lifting the child to prevent them from being trampled. Her arm wrapped protectively around their small body, shielding them from the frantic jabs and pushes of the crowd.
"Shh, it's okay," she soothed, her voice calm and reassuring. She gently rubbed the child's back, trying to offer some semblance of comfort as they clung to her clothing, their tiny fingers gripping tightly.
"Hold on tight, alright?" she whispered, her eyes darting around in search of the safest route out. She scanned the chaotic scene, looking for a gap in the crowd, a path to safety.
The child's tears soaked through her shirt, but Amari's resolve hardened. She would get them out of here, no matter what. She pushed forward, her body acting as a shield against the surge of people. With each step, she navigated the shifting tides of the panicked crowd, her only focus on protecting the child in her arms.
"Almost there," she murmured, more to herself than to the child, as she spotted a clearer path ahead. She tightened her grip, every muscle in her body straining as she moved forward.
Finally, she spotted an emergency exit sign glowing faintly through the smoke. She made her way toward it, her heart pounding with both fear and determination. As they neared the exit, the crowd began to thin, and Amari felt a glimmer of hope.
“Almost there,” she whispered to the child, who clung to her with a renewed sense of courage. With one last effort, they reached the exit and burst through the doors into the open air.
Amari took a deep breath, the fresh air a stark contrast to the chaos they had just escaped. She glanced down at the child, who looked up at her with a mix of gratitude and relief.
“You did great,” she said softly, giving the child a reassuring smile. “We’re safe now.”
The child nodded, their eyes still wide but now filled with a glimmer of hope. Amari knew that the ordeal was far from over, but for now, they were safe. And that was enough.
Gently lowering the child, Amari winced slightly. Some civilians had sharp elbows.
"Are you okay?" the tear-stained child asked, their voice quivering with concern.
"Of course, sweetheart. It takes more than a few jabs to knock me down," she replied, flexing her arm playfully, the little girl laughing quietly. Despite the silent protest from her body, she knelt down, her eyes focusing on the little girl's.
"Are you okay?" she asked softly, quickly scanning the child for any injuries. The little girl shook her head no. Amari slipped off her—Ken's—jacket and placed it over the little girl's shoulders.
"Good," she smiled. "What's your name?"
"Hina," the little girl whispered.
"That's a beautiful name," Amari smiled.
Hina smiled back, a small light of comfort in her eyes.
"Hina, I'm Amari and we're going to find your mom, alright?" Amari said, her voice filled with determination. Hina's worry vanished at the look on Amari's face, and she nodded.
"Do you remember what your mom was wearing or what she looks like?" Amari asked, glancing around for any sign of the woman.
Hina furrowed her eyebrows in concentration before looking up at Amari and pointing. "Glasses."
"Glasses,"
Amari to the rescue ^^
