(The night of the dinner with the new neighbors)

Lily's voice, filled with tenderness and understanding, reached out to Iris, who sat motionless amidst the fragments of the broken elephant model. The shattering sound had swiftly drawn the attention of everyone in the house, from Lily's concerned parents to Iris's own family, who promptly gathered at the entrance of Lily's room.

Kneeling beside Iris, Lily's touch was surprisingly gentle and comforting as she wiped away Iris's tears. "It's okay, Iris. Don't be scared. Everyone makes mistakes," she reassured her new friend, her voice soothing in the midst of the unsettling situation.

Overcome with emotion, Iris managed to whisper, "I'm sorry, Lily," her fear of having damaged something precious to her new friend palpable in her words.

Lily's unwavering smile and calming presence helped alleviate some of Iris's distress. "It's just a toy, Iris. What matters is that you're okay," Lily emphasized, her parents exchanging a silent glance that acknowledged the budding friendship between the two girls, one that had weathered a challenging start.

In the passing of days, Iris discovered herself becoming increasingly drawn to Lily's infectious enthusiasm and boundless imagination. They would spend countless hours together, fearlessly exploring every nook and cranny of their neighborhood, conquering the tallest trees, and spinning fantastical tales that reverberated through the quaint streets of Bamberg. Each day, Iris felt a heavy burden of loneliness lifting from her shoulders, gradually replaced by the comforting warmth of Lily's genuine friendship.

Observing their daughter's remarkable transformation, Iris's parents, Maria and Klaus, couldn't contain their elation. They had yearned to see Iris connect with a kindred spirit who appreciated her idiosyncrasies and valued her for who she was. After heartfelt discussions with Lily's parents, they eagerly explored the idea of Lily attending school alongside Iris, hoping that the structured environment would fortify their daughters' inseparable bond.

One fateful morning, Iris was awoken by the news that filled her heart with unbridled joy – Lily was to begin attending school with her the very next day. The thought of facing her classmates with Lily by her side stirred a potent mixture of excitement and trepidation within Iris. Would her peers embrace Lily as readily as she had?

The following day, Iris and Lily strolled confidently hand in hand into their school. As they made their way through the corridors, the whispers and turned heads of their fellow students indicated that Lily's infectious laughter and bright smile had certainly not gone unnoticed. Their entrance even piqued the curiosity of the seniors, who had once been less than kind to Iris because of her sixth finger.

Upon Lily's arrival in Iris's classroom, the students were immediately captivated by her charm and were eager to strike up new friendships with her. Despite the attention she was receiving, Lily remained steadfast in her loyalty to Iris. As the children surrounded her with questions and invitations to play, Lily's dedication to Iris became increasingly apparent. When Iris confided in Lily about the hurtful remarks she had faced due to her sixth finger, she was not met with the expected sympathy or rage. Instead, Lily took Iris aback once again with her unexpected response.

"I think having six fingers is really cool," Lily declared sincerely, her eyes sparkling with conviction. "I wish I had them too. It makes you special, Iris."

Iris blinked in astonishment, deeply moved by Lily's unique perspective. From that day onwards, Lily became Iris's unwavering ally, fearlessly standing up to anyone who dared to ridicule her friend. Their bond grew stronger with each passing day, solidified through shared adventures and whispered secrets.

As the sun set over the neighborhood park, a group of rowdy boys tried to ruffle the feathers of Iris and Lily. However, the two girls remained steadfast, countering the taunts with quick wit and unyielding courage. Their resilience left the boys at a loss for words, and slowly but surely, the teasing subsided, making way for a begrudging respect for the girls who refused to back down.

Approaching her upcoming birthday, Iris was eager to celebrate and share her joy with her new friends. She extended an invitation to all the students in her class for a grand party at her house. The day of the party arrived amidst bright and festive vibes, with the sounds of games and laughter ringing through the halls of her home.

Throughout the party, Iris and Lily were an unbreakable duo, showcasing flawless teamwork in every game they participated in. Their triumphs drew admiration and, at times, envy from their peers. Sensing the emotions in the air, Iris and Lily gracefully decided to share their prizes with everyone, transforming what could have been a competitive event into a heartwarming celebration of unity and camaraderie.

The day after the party, unable to contain their excitement, Iris and Lily decided to play hooky and spend the day together. They met up at Iris's house and as soon as they arrived, they were surrounded by the gifts from the party. The colorful wrapping paper and ribbons added to their excitement as they eagerly opened each present. They laughed and squealed in delight, marveling at the thoughtfulness of their classmates.

"Lily, look at this beautiful bracelet I got from Sarah!" Lily exclaimed, holding up a delicate handmade bracelet from one of their friends. Iris smiled and handed Lily a beautifully wrapped package containing a book she had been longing to read.

"We should make a rule," Iris suggested with a mischievous sparkle in her eyes. "Every time there's a vacation, we should hug each other and promise to bring back gifts for each other."

Lily's eyes widened in delight. "Yes! And we'll write letters to each other while we're apart, telling about all the adventures we're having."

Their bond grew stronger with each passing day, anchored by shared experiences, unwavering support, and unique rituals that were exclusive to their friendship. Iris had found not just a friend in Lily, but a kindred spirit who saw beyond her differences and embraced her for who she was.
