The rain droplets softly and slowly cascaded down my window, the light grey clouds in the background helping create a beautiful but dull atmosphere. I exhaled a soft sigh as I watched people walk past my house, with their dogs, their friends, or even their family. I miss them. Ever since I was little, I never got to go out of the house, not even to go study, I had to ask my parents to help me, but even then, my requests of help and education were denied.

But I guess that's what happens when your adoptive parents are rich as heck. Yeah, my adoptive parents. I never met my real parents, apparently they tossed me away the minute I turned 4 years old, and I've been in foster care since. These guys are probably the 500th family I've gotten, but I've lost count after 100, too much counting. When these people came to adopt a child, I was probably the last person they ever thought of adopting, but here I am. In a mansion, attending the best private school in Hazelbuck, and doing well in school.

In the past, not all experiences were... nice, and others were, but the ones they were, they sent me back to the foster system because I was "too clever for their needs and not pretty enough", but that's an understatement. The ladies at the foster system said that I'll be the least likely to be picked because of my condition. My eyes. One was blue, and the other was brown, that's also known as Heterochromia. I didn't think that they were serious about it, but when you're a 5 year old girl in hopes of getting a good family, and after many trials and errors, you begin to believe it.

My name was also a reason for people not wanting to adopt me- so I lead myself to believe. Astrid. What a weird name. But when my now adoptive parents came in, and saw me, something clicked in them and they immediately chose me, not needing to look at any other children. They wanted me, and I'd be lying if I said I wasn't shocked by that when I heard the news. My thoughts were interrupted by a door closing, and I softly smiled at the man walking towards me, hugging me "ah, my darling Astrid. How's your day been, hm?" I cleared my throat "it's been okay, Benny, same as yesterday. Just staring into the abyss, and reading."

We both chuckled and Benny smiled at me, hugging me again "well, you never know what knowledge books can fill you with, you keep it up, dear. Oh, and, before I go" he spoke to me as he grabbed his car keys and left for the front door of the house "tell Margot that I'll be working late again. My condolences, sweetheart but something came up at work that needs my urgent attention." I just smiled and nodded "it's nothing, Benny, now go or you'll be late again." We both laughed as he left the door, but not before waving me a little goodbye.

Once the door closed and locked, I sighed and made my way to the kitchen, boredom filled my mind once more. Benny and Margot were nice people, probably the best adoptive parents yet, but I've only been living with them for about a month, so I can't come to conclusions just yet. Once I entered the kitchen, I saw the head house maid Jacqueline cleaning the benches, and my voice interrupted her process "would you like any help, Jacqueline?" She looked at me, startled by my sudden interruption and she chuckled nervously "o-o-oh n-no ma'am... I'll be alright here." I knitted my brows together in slight frustration and confusion, seeing that she was struggling to get a few spots off of the kitchen bench and counters.
