"You wouldn't mind if I took the wheel?"
Amari asked, but she didn’t wait for an answer. She slipped into the driver’s seat, adrenaline pushing her to action.
With a slight excuse to break the speed limit, she raced the car down the empty road. The tires screeched against the asphalt, leaving behind a faint trail of burnt rubber. As she weaved through the deserted streets, the city lights blurred into streaks of yellow and white, flashing past her windows like staccato bursts of light.
She stopped just inches from breaking a red light. To her left, Mr. Sato clung to the seat belt for dear life.
"Amari," he weakly called, his voice shaking. Her hands had been trembling since Mari told her Ken’s status. She just pretended not to think about it, to avoid the gnawing anxiety. Distracting herself with conversations and interactions.
"I just--" she started, but words failed her. Her eyes, however, conveyed everything. She was terrified, and Mr. Sato knew; he felt that same anxiousness too.
If she wasn't smiling, she sure would start crying.
"Then it's best we get there to check on him," Mr. Sato said, offering an assuring smile.
Changing gears, she pressed on the accelerator, the car speeding on. Once the car screeched to a stop, she was out before the engine was even off. She rushed as quickly as she could in her current state.
Before she could even knock on the door, it swung open, and Ken’s arms enveloped her... As if he knew.
"Ken, you're okay," she whispered, as she buried her face in his chest. "Are you-- you were limping," he worried, having been notified about their arrival by Mina.
"What makes you think I didn't get the limp because of you?" she teased.
He chuckled, "I wouldn’t mind that being the truth. I promise to take care of you after," he whispered. His hand massaging her lower back.
A clearing throat reminded them they weren’t alone.
She quickly leaned back, "Your father has something to say to you," she said, avoiding his gaze as she rushed past, giving him a pat of encouragement as she slipped into the house. "Goodbye, Mr. Sato!" she yelled.
Moving deeper into the house, wishing to give them privacy. She felt a semblance of relaxation but the anxiety still lingered. The flashing colors and screeching sounds grew louder, making it all worse.
"He's fine, he's here," she quietly assured herself, mindlessly walking down to the lights in order to switch them off but she halts at the sound of a screech.
"Mari, what was that?" she asked. "Mari, please access the house security footage"
Now downstairs, Amari’s eyes widened at the sight of the giant baby Kaiju which in person was far bigger than what the security footage showed. The massive creature loomed, an unsettling presence that brought shivers down her spin.
Standing there, she stared at the project her mother had chosen over her—the project that consumed her mother's every waking hour.
Her gaze locked onto the creature, and she whispered, "Mom’s legacy."
Those words grabbed the baby Kaiju'S attention, turning to stare at Amari. As they stared at each other, Amari tilted her head, the baby Kaiju mimicking her.
Then it clicked, Gigantron, the package... Baby Gigantron.
Suddenly it screamed as giant tears began to roll from its eyes. "Oh, no, no, no," Amari panicked.
"Don't cry, please?" she tried.
Softly, she began humming, before the soft song flowed form her lips. "Baby, mine. Don't you cry," she sang softly, kneeling down to look less threatening.
She sang the song her father used to sing to her. It was her song, their song so very long ago. Even though, Amari wasn't the best singer, it was decent enough that the baby Kaiju stopped crying. "Baby, mine. Dry your eyes," she continued.
"Rest your head, close to my heart. Never to part, baby of mine," she whispered. Soft coos came from the baby as it slowly sat down, following Amari's example whilst listening to her song.
Amari's eyes sparkled as she realized,
"baby" she softly whispered. This was but a baby."Amari, where are you..." Ken came to a halt, seeing Amari.
Bruised up but still looking beautiful. Playing peak-a-boo with a giant baby Kaiju who squealed in delight. He could only admire her,
Amari...
Goodness, she'd make a great mom. That much he was certain of. Her face filled with joy as she laughed with the baby, somehow understanding its coos and babbles.
"Ari," he finally called, walking over and wrapping his arms around her waist. He kissed her neck. Frustration caused him brows to furrow at the sight of her bandages but they softened as he felt her relax in his hold.
"Kenji," she whispered, leaning into his touch. "She's beautiful," Before he could speak, the cries of the baby Kaiju filled the room.
