Chapter 2: I Hate Mondays

"So how was the trip?" You asked. The ring around your icon expanded and contracted in accordance to your voice. Your lower body swiveled in the gaming chair, a habit of yours you couldn't seem to shake. It was comforting. Certainly better than being on your feet all day like at work. Speaking of work, today was a slog to get through. Cranky customers filing in to get their cup of Monday morning Joe, sleep deprived workers--the whole shebang.

"It was pretty good," [friend's name] responded. "The wedding was at this really beautiful beach venue in Florida. The heat was a total beast though," she reminisced. "And the reception went on forever." You felt a cold sweat break out on your forehead as you tried to imagine sitting in the sun in Florida, sundress all but baked into your skin. You had, alternatively, spent your weekend in the basement, fanned by air conditioning

"Yikes, dude," you responded. "I mean, did you at least get a nice tan?" You asked.

"Oh yeah. A real nice strawberry pink tan," she sassed. You could feel her eyes knocking against the back of her skull just from her words alone.

"So that's a no, I'm guessing..." you replied sheepishly.

"But enough about me. What did you get up to?"

You allowed your mind to drift back to Friday night. The dimly lit screen, the clacking of fingers on keys in a WASD configuration, the prickish banter.

"I just chilled out, y'know? Hopped on Roblox and got down to playing The Mimic," you listed. You deliberately left out your unexpected meeting with your dustbunny. You wanted to save the reveal for a little later, rub it in your friend's face a bit that you had found someone else. A little bit of teasing never hurt anybody, especially not [friend's name].

On the other side of the call, [friend's name] shifted awkwardly.

"I'm really sorry I couldn't play, [Reader]. I would've got on if it wasn't such a big family event." Now you felt bad. [Friend's name] sounded genuinely apologetic for not being able to game with you on Friday, or all weekend for that matter. It wasn't even their fault, you thought ruefully. At least they have a life outside of this game.

"No need to apologize, [Friend's name]. Believe it or not, I actually did find someone to play with." You did your best to keep your face from pulling into the cheesiest smirk.

"Oh? Like who?" You wondered if your friend was now leaning in close to their monitor screen.

"Just some guy called Xx_EatMyDust_xX...he was kind of a weirdo, but he was funny." You found it ironic that you called dustbunny a weirdo, when you yourself were one. It added comedic effect though, that was for sure.

"So in other words, you met your soulmate?" Your friend's insipid laugh filled your headset.

"Psht, whatever. I need to do my laundry," you quickly excused yourself.

"On a Monday?"

"Yes, on a Monday."

You promptly left the call and slid off your headset, sinking into your chair with humiliation. As you steeped in your embarrassment, you received a chat notification from your friend.

[Friend's Name]: What, embarrassed by your e-boyfriend? ;3

"Somebody kill me," you said to no one in particular.

The early morning commute to work was never a pleasant one. You weren't even sure if you could consider yourself conscious during it. You didn't like coffee either, so it's not like you could rely on that make your life easier. You simply moved in the herd of people made strange by their Quirks--or perhaps you were the strange one.
