The office door creaked open, and I jolted a mile. A guy walked in, looking like someone photoshopped Kim's face onto a GQ model's body. Same sharp features, same confident stride, but a world of difference in his eyes. They weren't cold exactly, just... distant. Like he was looking through me, not at me.
"Hey, you are... Alexis Anderson?" He asked, voice smooth as butter. "The new EA?"
"Y–yeah," I stammered, unsure how to react. Before I could figure it out, Ms. Rachel practically materialized from thin air, clutching a folder to her chest like a lifeline. Her eyes were wide, almost panicked. "Uh, Sir! Mr. Chairman!" She squeaked, bowing at a ninety-degree angle.
My jaw practically hit the floor. I scrambled up, mirroring Ms. Rachel's bow with a shaky hand. "G–good morning, sir," I managed. "Apologies for my, uh, earlier... unpreparedness."
He offered a tight smile. "No worries. How are you settling in?"
"I–I'm doing okay," I mumbled.
"Good to hear," he said, his smile not reaching his eyes. "I'm here to see your... stubborn boss." He didn't wait for a reply, just walked straight towards Kim's office, his entourage following like a pack of silent wolves.
Five broad dudes materialized behind him, instantly turning the office into a scene from a bad action movie. Two took post in front of Kim's door, looking like they could bench press a car. Three more crowded inside the doorway, blocking the view. Another five lingered by the main office entrance, looking like bored bouncers.
'Wow,' I thought, feeling a prickle of unease crawl up my spine. This whole Chairman thing was news to me. Ms. Rachel and I exchanged a nervous glance, but before we could even think about whispering a question, the sound of raised voices erupted from behind the closed door.
"Little KC! Stop this! This is ridiculous!" A man's voice, laced with exasperation.
"Stay out of it, Dad! This is mine to handle, my decision!" Kim's voice, cold and sharp as a shard of ice.
"What's the point of all this, KC? You're not the person I raised! I never approved this kind of nonsense!"
"You don't understand! If something happens to...!" Her voice broke, then a harsh laugh. "Screw it. I'll never forgive the one who caused this!"
"KC, listen to me, this... this has to stop. Look at you!" He sounded frustrated. "This is exactly why I pulled you out! Leaking tempers won't solve anything. Stop this or I'll put a stop to it myself. You've done enough damage!"
"Dad! Shut up!"
"No more talking!" The man boomed.
The door flew open, revealing a harried-looking Mr. Chairman. He took one look at us, then walked straight towards me, pulling a card from his wallet.
"Here, dear," he said, his voice surprisingly gentle. "You might need this. If things get... hairy, you can report to me directly. Keep your eyes peeled, alright? Don't let anyone pull the wool over yours."
"Th–thank you, Mr. Chairman," I stammered, completely bewildered.
He smiled, but it didn't quite reach his eyes, "Kent. Kent Clarke Garnette. And it's a pleasure to meet you, Alexis," before turning to leave.
Ms. Rachel and I stared, mouths agape. Pleasure? Why the cryptic warnings? What was going on here? My head spun, a tangled mess of confusion and a growing sense of dread.
The day crawled by, punctuated by the occasional slam of Kim's office door. Each bang echoed through me like a thunderclap. By 7PM, she practically stormed out, leaving a trail of frustrated energy in her wake. It was the same every day—Kim, a tightly wound whirlwind, radiating impatience and a simmering anger that made the air crackle.
