The last thing I heard was Keith gasping for air, as the blast wave made the lion shake before I lost consciousness.
Pov Lance
I was surrounded by complete silence. I don't think I've ever heard so much silence in my life. Suddenly, the happenings of the past 25 minutes played through my head. It was like a movie but at high speed.
I saw Keith's terrified expression right before we crashed into the wormhole. My heart started to beat faster in fear.Where is he now? Is he okay? What if he's dead? Wait-!
Am I dead?
I concentrated on my body, trying to see if I could feel my limbs.
I could.
The uncomfortable hard ground I was laying on was difficult to ignore by now. Finally I opened my eyes.I stared at the seeling of the red lion. As expected, not at a mortal creature that was supposed to lead me to the underworld.
That's good. I'm unharmed. Except my head hurts a little, now, that I think about it...
But that wasn't from the accident. That was from Keith.
"Keith?!"
I sat myself up, nervously looking around, searching the room for a mullet, but I couldn't find one.
Fuck. Fuck, fuck, fuck!
"KEITH!"
I screamed into the silence. No answer. I leaped up towards the control panel, desperately staring at the location monitor as I searched for some kind of signal that could be Keith.
Did he fly out of the lion? Did he make it through the wormhole? Was he captured by the galra? Is he drifting through wide space unconscious? Or even worse- dead?
I started to panic. My breath hitched as I brought my hands up covering my face, catching the tears that started running down my cheeks.
This is all my fault! If I had just done what he told me... Maybe he would still be here with me now.
"Lance...?"
A weak whisper made me spin around. There he was.
Keith, collapsed on the pilot chair, sweaty black strains sticking to his forehead under the helmet, barely able to lift his head up to look at me.I let out a yelp before quickly closing the gap between us, wrapping my arms around him. It took me a few seconds to catch my breath.
He's alive. He's here with me. I'm not alone.
"Relax, it's not like I'd die from a little spacecraft accident..."
Keith grunted into my ear. His hands softly pushed me back by my chest so I let go of him to look into his eyes. I cupped his head for support as I kneeled down in front of the chair to be on his eye level.
"Oh quiznack, Lance, were you crying?"
"No?"
I lied even though I knew my shaky voice would betray me.
“Don’t look at me like that, Lance… I’m fine, see?”
He grabbed my hands and pushed them down as he slowly lifted himself up from the pilot chair. I stepped back to give him room but still close enough to catch him, if he underestimated his strength.
He didn’t.
He stood in front of me, perfectly balanced but still holding onto my hands. I looked down. He followed my gaze and quickly let go before taking a few steps back.
There was a moment of silence as we looked at each other.“So… where are we? Where are the others?”
Keith changed the topic as he turned away walking towards the monitors of the red lion.
“I don’t know. The location screens haven’t shown any signs of life. We’re in the middle of nowhere.”
I watched his gloved hands slide over the different buttons of the control panel as he furrowed his brows.
That’s one of his habits I noticed back at the garrison: The thing with his brows he does when he’s focused on something, how he never took off his fingerless leather gloves, the way he always observes every situation and notices every single detail.
Except me.
I don’t think he has ever noticed me.“That thing catapulted us through the whole universe! We’re thousands of galaxies away from where we should be!”
His voice sounded angsty but still confident, like he still had everything under control. It kinda calmed me down, numbed the feeling of panic driving through my veins. I moved behind him and gazed at the screens.
“How is that possible? We went through the same wormhole as the others.”
“I think it might have something to do with the explosion…”
He mumbled while scrolling through the location data.
“I can’t find the castle. We’re too far away, Lance.”
I brought my palms up to my head covering my face.
That’s bad. Really bad. Horrible. My worst nightmare. How are we ever going to find the others?
“Don’t panic, Lance. We got this. We have enough water and food on this lion to survive for two months. That’s hopefully enough time to find the castle.”
I took a deep breath. And another one.
“I don’t think I can do this, Keith.”
“What are you talking about?”
I can’t survive inside of the small cockpit of the red lion with you constantly being around me.
I can’t look at you without comparing us.
We can’t be around each other for such a long period of time without fighting constantly.
I won’t be able to concentrate on the mission of finding the others because I’m distracted by you and your stupid mullet!“Why in hell does it have to be you I’m stuck with?!”
He sighed
“Listen sharpshooter, you brought us into this. Now don’t be a baby and pull yourself together!”
I grunted and turned away from him while crossing my arms in front of my chest.
“Don’t blame me! Who was the one driving the lion, huh?”
I raised an eyebrow at him.
"Just admit it, if I weren't here you would've already lost your mind! So be greatful!"
Keith spat back.
"Oh and what exactly made you think that?"
"You were literally sobbing five minutes ago thinking I was dead. Without me you wouldn't even be able to figure out a plan to find the others!"
"Is that so, Mullet? Then show me your oh so great plan!"
I threw my hands in the air in annoyance and shook my head.
"Oh I will!"
"OKAY then!"
"OKAY!"
Oh if only looks could kill… we’d both be lying dead on the ground and wouldn’t be stuck in here together.
