" You're just tagging along because you want to gawk at him, aren't you? " you accuse, not taking your eyes off the path ahead. Your heels click rhythmically on the pavement as you and Liam weave through the city. Your outfit is more than decent—it's fantastic. Thrifting might just be the best thing to ever happen to humanity.
" Who wouldn't? " Liam retorts, keeping pace beside you. " But then again, " he clicks his tongue, " we're not even sure if this is for real, right? " He grins, " I'm here for the laugh. "
You roll your eyes and grab your phone, turning it on to follow the location on the map provided by the website. You and Liam walk toward an opening that faces the water.
Liam looks at the view and comments, " Awesome. Nice office, " with heavy sarcasm.
You frown and drop your shoulders. " Fuck, we walked all this way for nothing, " you curse. " Let's go home. You got your laugh, and I got my punch in the gut. You should be quiet on the way back. "
" The walk wasn't so bad, " Liam argues.
You furrow your brows. " You're not the one in heels, Smith. Walking sure was a breeze for me. " You roll your eyes.
" That's good to hear, " a voice interrupts from behind. You and Liam fall silent and turn around.
It's a floating ball of metal with a voice. You and Liam exchange a look before he gently nudges you toward the ball. " H-how so? " you ask hesitantly.
" Because you'll be doing a lot more walking, " the metal ball answers, scanning you as it speaks. " [Name] [Surname]. " As it finishes, you see a series of metal platforms rising above the water behind it, extending seemingly endlessly.
Liam's eyes widen. " Wait—she needs to walk all the way over— " He cuts himself off, squinting to see the end of the metal path, only for his heart to sink when he realizes it continues as far as he can see. " Actually, [Name], sweetie, I'm going home, 'kay? " He laughs sheepishly before rushing off.
The metal ball continues to watch as Liam disappears from view. You roll your eyes and turn back to face it. " I'm sorry about him, " you apologize.
" No need to apologize, " the metal ball replies, shifting slightly to guide you toward the platform. " I was only expecting one applicant. "
You offer a polite smile as you take your first tentative steps onto the platforms. On your fourth step, you stumble slightly. " Woah, " you exclaim, slowly regaining your balance.
" Careful, " the metal ball gently reminds, an umbrella materializing from an opening within it. The ball hovers quietly over your head.
" Thanks, " you say, steadying yourself. " Let's keep going. "
