It was a cold, misty winter day in Camp Half-Blood and Hazel was wearing absolutely nothing except a sweater and leggings. As you can imagine, she was freezing.

No jewels were rising from the ground as Hazel trudged through the woods. Either it was too cold for that, or the jewels and metal were on winter break too.

Hazel heard a sharp crack. She looked down, expecting to see a twig that had cracked under her foot, but there was only soft white snow. Hazel shrugged and kept walking. She wanted to get to the border to meet her brother, Nico Di Angelo, at Half-Blood Hill.

Her plans were ruined when she heard a thump and barely had time to look up before a dragon plummeted from the tree tops toward her. Hazel screamed and rolled out of the way just in time before the dragon could turn her into demigod pancake.

Hazel had no sword with her, but her ability to control the Mist and metal could help her out.

Despite the panic rising in her chest, Hazel tried to will the Mist to make it look like she was on top of the dragon. When the monster swiped his claws at Hazel again, Hazel focused harder. The dragon paused. He twisted his head up, looking at his back, and Hazel realized her trick had worked. She studied the dragon, looking for weak spots and potential hand holds.

Hazel noticed that the dragon was a rare shade of turquoise-grey that shone in the sunlight. Hazel had seen only one creature—or rather, person—who could shape shift and shape shift into a dragon that colour.

Frank Zhang.

Hazel's sweet best friend. Why was he attacking her? If this was really Frank, Hazel didn't want to hurt him—but she did have to get him out of the "kill Hazel" stage he was going through.

Hazel sprinted towards the dragon—Frank—who was still swatting at his back, thinking Hazel was there. Soon, she was there, straddling his wide back and dodging his claws. Hazel sent her mind way down to the earth. She found rubies, amethysts, emeralds...all unhelpful.

Hazel searched deeper, and finally found a particularly sharp diamond.

That'll work.

She sent the diamond surging up. The daughter of Pluto willed the diamond to rise up and jab Frank in each of his legs at the knees. The pain sent Frank's legs buckling as he collapsed. Hazel almost fell off, but grabbed Frank's shoulder to steady herself at the last moment.

"Don't move," Hazel commanded, trying to keep the shaking out of her voice. "I'll hit you again."

Frank the Dragon made a hissing sound, but stopped struggling as much.

Hazel climbed down him, and as she did, Frank turned back into a human. Hazel stepped in front of Frank's face and pinned him to the ground, sitting in his again. It was strange being in this position with Frank after having a crush on him ever since they became friends, back in Camp Jupiter, but Hazel brushed that thought away.

"Frank, what's going on?" She asked in a gentler-but-still-angry tone. "Why did you attack me?"

"Eidolons," Frank managed to say. "Two inside me at once."

Hazel gasped.

Two? How was that even possible?

"Are you sure?" Hazel prodded, but it was half-hearted. Frank was obviously telling the truth. Frank nodded, hanging his head as much as he could while lying on the ground. "I'm so, so sorry."

"Frank—"

"I didn't want to attack you. I wish I could've stopped. I should have—"

Hazel cut him off by catching his mouth with hers. Frank seemed surprised for a moment, but then he relaxed. When they broke the kiss, Frank said, "Why did you do that?"

"What do you mean by that?"

"You don't think I'm the biggest idiot in the world?"

Hazel surprised them both by laughing. "No, Frank. I think you're amazing."

"I think you're amazing too." Frank cupped Hazel's face and pulled it down to kiss her again.

He thinks I'm amazing. And he's the most amazing best friend I could ever ask for.

I wouldn't have it any other way.
