The weekend brought a family gathering—a birthday celebration for her cousin. Sarah felt her chest tighten as they approached the bustling venue. She plastered on a smile, but inside, she trembled with anxiety.

In the midst of laughter and chatter, Sarah's uncle approached her. His words were casual, but their effect was devastating. "Hey there, Sarah, still the quiet one, huh? Always hiding behind those books."

Laughter erupted around them, but Sarah felt exposed, as though the wound from years ago had been torn open anew. She excused herself, retreating to a corner where she could hide her tears.

Her cousin, sensing her distress, followed her quietly. "Are you okay, Sarah?" he asked gently.

Sarah forced a smile. "Yeah, just... family stuff."

"You know, you can talk to me if you need to," he offered.

"Thanks," she murmured, grateful for his understanding.

Later that night, Sarah sat alone in her room, the echoes of her uncle's words reverberating in her mind. She picked up her phone and dialed her best friend's number, needing to hear a familiar voice.

"Hey, Sarah! What's up?" her friend greeted cheerfully.

"Hey," Sarah replied softly. "I just needed to talk. Can we hang out tomorrow?"

"Of course! I'll come over in the afternoon," her friend said reassuringly.

Sarah felt a weight lift off her chest. "Thanks, I really appreciate it."
