After I had returned to London nothing was the same as before. I would have been lying if I said that I did not miss how things used to be. Easier. Less complicated.
Yet, there I was, too stunned to speak when I saw him enter the grand hall where the rest of the Aurors of the British ministry of magic worked. By his side I spotted another familiar face, though latter one I was a lot less interested in. »You really came here? To London? Did you really see no other way to avoid her?«, I confronted the blond wizard as he passed by my desk. Instantly he stopped. His head slowly turned towards me as if he had not seen me stand there before. What a terrible actor. I told myself quietly.
A shiver ran down my spine as his blue eyes rested on my face. Cold. Emotionless. Nicolas Vermont seemed like a whole different person.
Sure, he had always been rather cold towards me, but this – this was nothing like the way he had acted before. In Paris. Despite he had his usual, straight posture, it was more than clear that he was broken. His emotionless gaze only underlined what I already knew. Alas he raised his brow as if he expected me to answer my own question. Even Collette, his trainee seemed unsure of what to think of the situation. The usually talkative witch did not dare to look at me, so instead her brown eyes did the same as mine and lingered on Nicolas.
When neither I, nor the handsome man said another word, he briskly shook his head and continued pacing towards the corridor on the other side of the room. I figured that he and Kondo were heading to the training room, which would have explained why the young woman was following him around like a puppy. Poor thing. I pitied her.
My eyes followed them until they disappeared behind another person who had squeezed themselves in between us.
»Conny.« When I heard the deep, familiar voice, I shuddered. »Maxim.«, was my only response. I still did not face the man who was standing somewhere next, but also in front of me. No, I tried to look to where they went only a few seconds ago. »Hello, will you look at me instead?«, finally I gave up and directed my attention at the brunet man who now tried talking to me. »Look– «, he started, unsure of how to proceed with our conversation »I know I have not been particularly fair to you during the last year and a half, but– « At that I frowned. »Not particularly fair? Is this some bad joke? Maxim you dumped me for another woman, just a few weeks before we were supposed to move to Paris together. Not fair would be an understatement.«
