. . . Prologue . . . (preview)
The crunching sound of my shoes hitting the gravel sounded through the thick summer air as I hurried through the pompous yard of the castle.
With fast paced steps I headed towards the gigantic door, marking the entrance to the place I would call my home, starting September.
Finally I pushed against the wooden once I had reached it.
I found myself in a spacious entrance hall and for a moment put my small briefcase down so I could take in my surroundings.
The atmosphere of the castle was truly impressive. It was ancient and made me feel entirely consumed by it as I scrutinised the granite pillars and statues in hall.
With a small sigh I breathed in the cool air which was a nice change compared to the unbearable summer heat. Then I picked up my briefcase once more before swinging it over my shoulder.
With big steps I climbed up the stairs which led to even more of their kind.
It did not take me long until I realized that I was lost.
After all, I never attended Hogwarts as a student and therefore had no idea where I needed to go.
Quickly I paced around a corner which led into yet another corridor, when I suddenly bumped into someone.
»I thought it was clear that students are not permitted to enter the building during their summer break?«, an icy voice made me look up. Dark brown eyes scrutinized me and I stared back at them. »Excuse me?«, I bit back an inappropriate comment.
Surely this man could not seriously have mistaken me as a student? He did not look much older than me himself.
A curious gleam flickered in his eyes but as quickly as I had noticed it, it disappeared again.
It made me wonder what he might have been thinking, but I decided to ignore it.
Instead I shook my head and looked to the side, trying to avoid his piercing gaze. »I am looking for headmaster Dippet.«, I stated and the brunet man rose his brow. For a moment he scrutinised me like this before shaking his head in disbelief. »Please tell me you are not here for the new position?«, he asked me in return.
Something clung to his voice which I could not determine. Was it interest? Surely he would have reacted differently if it was.
Briefly I bit my lip before nodding.
»I am. Albus Dumbledore sent me an owl about the contract.«, I revealed promptly. The stranger only huffed in response and muttered something to himself which sounded an awful lot like >Of course, he did.<.
My gaze wandered towards the corridor behind him and I momentarily wondered, whether I should ask him for the directions to my destination, but in the end decided against it.
Instead I briefly nodded a goodbye to the man before heading in the direction I previously went in.
I had just reached the end of the corridor when his voice repeatedly sounded from behind me. »If you are looking for Armando you are walking in the wrong direction. His office is the other way. I suppose I could show you the way if you actually need me to.«
When I turned around to face him, the wizard's expression was still a cold one, but at least the previous tension in his posture had become less intense.
Briskly I returned to his side before nodding. »That would be incredibly kind of you, sir.«, I whispered defeated hence I knew that he was my only chance if I wanted to be on time for my appointed. Then he led the way.
As we approached headmaster Dippet's office I could not help but notice the brunet's curious gaze lingering on me.
»I assume you did not attend Hogwarts as a student hence you don't know your way around yet?«, he finally asked me when we stopped in front of a statue. This time I shook my head. »I did not. In fact I attended Beauxbatons.«, admitted.
Without saying a word he turned his back towards me and pointed his wand at the statue. When the wizard muttered the words ‚magus magnus' in front of the granite phoenix and yet another staircase was revealed I raised my brows in surprise. Quickly I followed him and once we reached the bottom I found myself in the headmaster's office.
Said wizard sat in a pompous armchair by a desk. Various scrolls and sheets of parchment were scattered on the table in front of him.
He only moved his gaze to us when the man next to me cleared his throat.
»Armando, I believe this woman is here to see you.«, he stated dryly and the older wizard nodded. A curious smile appeared on his lips as he raised himself and approached me. »You must be Amelia.«, he recognized me. I briskly introduced myself in a proper manner, but before we could talk about my contract the other man present led the headmaster aside. It was difficult for me to make out his words, but I managed to at least hear most bits of what he said to professor Dippet: »You can't seriously think that it would be a good idea to hire someone who has never even attended this school. Any damn student would know this place better than she does and may I add that she also seems to be awfully young?«
I suppressed a frustrated sigh. Then again, the other one shook his head. »She will learn to orientate herself sooner or later. And may I remind you, that I took you in and offered you this position when you were merely 22 yourself?«, he explained to him and then smiled at me. »I believe Miss Rosier will be perfect for this position.«
At the compliment my cheeks flushed and I lowered my gaze. »Thank you, professor.«
I was truly grateful for his trust and despite the other man did not seem to have quite as much faith in my abilities I decided not to give him another thought. If he wanted me to treat him the same way as he did it with me, he would get his wish. After all I was a person who never cared about whether others liked me or not.
It did not take long until said man nodded. His jaw had tensed once more and his gaze lingered on me for another second before he clicked his tongue in resentment, excused himself and left the two of us alone.
