After returning to Yancy from the field trip, Grover and I were summoned to the principals office. Grover sits beside me nervously, fidgeting with his fingers as the principal stares at me with an unreadable expression.
"Mrs. Davis, did you push Nancy Bobofit into the fountain?"
The principal asks. I shake my head.
"No, sir."
I respond. The principal scoffs a little.
"Mrs. Davis, we all know you did it. It's okay to admit it."
"I didn't push Nancy,"
I say again, louder.
"Sir."
I add at the end. The principal stares at me for a moment before looking at Grover, who's still a nervous wreck. I don't understand why. He's not even the one who did anything.
"Mr. Underwood, did you see Mrs. Davis push Nancy?"
He asks. Grover breathes a shaky sigh. I look at him, waiting for his response.
"...Yes. Sir,"
He answers, and my heart shatters.
"Grover-"
"I did."
Grover finishes, cutting me off without even looking in my direction. I look away from him; at the ground.
The principals eyes drag back to me.
"Well, Mrs. Davis, it just seems that Yancy Academy is not the right place for you,"
He says.
I should've known Grover would've tattled. He couldn't keep his mouth shut; any secrets his father told him not to tell anyone about I knew. But I guess I just thought that he'd put aside his chatterbox ways and help me not get expelled for the 7th time.
"Please go back your bags, Mrs. Davis."
The principal says. I get up, and Grover starts to get up to, but the principal puts a hand up, stopping Grover.
"You don't need to follow her, Mr. Underwood. I still have a few questions for you."
That's the last thing I hear before the door closes and I start silently crying while going to me and Grovers dorm.I liked Yancy. But now I can't be here. And it's all Grovers fault.
I grab my suitcase, wipe my tears, and start packing up all my stuff. When I'm finished, I look at my nightstand. I see the necklace me and Grover made. It had one of the most gorgeous rocks my father gave me on it. Me and my dad loved collecting rocks when I was younger.
I stare at the necklace for a moment, before snatching it off the nightstand and stuff it in my bag. I'm not letting Grover keep this.
Grover eventually comes in the room.
"Are you done packing?"
"Don't talk to me."
I say. I see the hurt on Grovers face, but I don't care.
"Kaylee, look, I'm really sor-"
"I said, 'Don't talk to me.'"
I snap, grab my suitcase, brush past him, and slam the door.
I don't understand why he's acting so hurt. He's the one who kicked me out of school.
And apparently, the word got out that I was kicked out, because some people were gawking at me.
As I walk to the exit of Yancy, I step outside and wait for a cab.
Nancy, with her head bandage that makes her look like a idiot, shouts,
"Ha! Hit the road, Kaylee! I told you you weren't smart enough to be here at Yancy!!"
It hurt, I admit it.
Mr. Brunner comes by, too.
"It's sad to see you go, Kaylee. But, maybe it's for the best. There's other boarding schools out there."
He says. I look at him, feeling neutral about his response. He looks at me for a moment, before pulling out a pen from his pocket; the same one I used at the museum.
"Take this; you may need it."
He says. I'm confused about needing it, considering I have multiple pens at home and in my bag, but I take it.
"...Thanks."
I say, as I get in the cab, and tell the driver where to go.
I stare out the window, my thoughts making me zone out.
But only one thought rings in the back of my head.
"Ha! Hit the road, Kaylee!!"
