Freddie didn't realise what was happening until he saw Zayn's fist hit Bear's eye and he stumbled backwards onto his own feet, landing on top of his friend and dropping them both like two salamis.

"Malik!" Gigi shrieked as she knelt beside Bear, who bellowed that he was fine, even though it was obvious otherwise. Zayn was a hard hitter... and Bear wasn't used to being punched in the face or getting into fisticuffs.

"It was nothing, baby doll. Just a pat... you know, to let the new guy know who's boss!" Zayn laughed, with a malice you would never have expected from him. Or at least not from the one they were to know in the future, as an adult.

"You have no right!" Gigi's voice had become a goose-pimpled squeak, although Gigi was anything but; she was outraged... he could tell.

Meanwhile, a halo of curious students had formed around them, both Cheerios and non-cheerios, drawn to the gym by Gigi's shouts and the whispers of the gossips who were already branching out like tributary streams.

All around, people were murmuring and commenting on the scene; a few girls, who must have had their eye on the beautiful cheerleader and her team, giggled ecstatically and exchanged looks of understanding. And a few boys clapped their hands and shouted "Fight! Fight!

Before Zayn could think of anything else, Harry walked into the gym with a raised eyebrow, then squared off the group that had formed, lingering a little too long on Freddie and Bear, staring at them intently in a creepy, overly scrupulous way, then pulling his friend away with a snort.

When Harry and Zayn had completely disappeared, swallowed up by the corridor that had also led them into the gym, Freddie, crushed by Bear's body, wriggled underneath. Then, looking at his friend's already blackened eye, he helped him to his feet. It was a really bad black eye; in short, Zayn's right had really left its mark!

"Would you like me to come with you to the infirmary?" Gigi asked, looking worriedly into Bear's round eyes, although she didn't make any apologies.

Although Freddie was charmed by her and felt butterflies in his stomach, he thought it was better to refuse: firstly because it was his aunt, then Gigi had already done too much damage and they had already interacted too much with their past parents, better not to ruin the situation further.

All that was left was to hide in a corner and never be seen again, except by Louis.

But really, how much could Louis Tomlinson have helped them back then? He was still a teenager and there was some fucking plutonium to find.

 Plutonium! Not chocolate snacks!

Freddie began to seriously doubt their chances of getting home; maybe Bear was right, maybe it was just impossible to do it all and his father was just crazy. What are you doing, Freddie, losing faith in the Tomlinsons?

That's right.You're pathetic.Shitty conscience.

They couldn't find Anne either, and although he hadn't been worried about that before, he was now; firstly because Anne was small and fragile, even though she wanted to prove the opposite, and if a bully from that school picked on her she wouldn't be able to defend herself, and secondly because Anne Styles was a troublemaker, better watch out.

As Freddie continued to drag Bear behind him like a dead weight, shuffling his feet on the floor and imitating his friend's movements, looking almost like a zombie, he huffed and puffed several times.

Students continued to point at him in the now repopulated corridor and Freddie pretended not to notice until he heard a voice, or rather a name, coming from the alleyway leading to the caretaker's cupboard door.
