"Elias...?" I whispered, stepping down the staircase as I wrapped my cloak around me.
It was awfully drafty this morning, even draftier than last night.
The sun hadn't risen yet; I reckon that I slept about an hour and then woke to find Elias gone.
So—naturally—I went searching for him.
He was gone, though... I searched the entire house.
His cabin was bigger than I remember; I guess I never really searched through it before.
It had been a couple minutes of looking, but I found a small letter in his kitchen written to me:
Good morning, my princess, I hope you slept well.
I had some business to deal with in town, so I won't be back until the sun rises. Knowing you, you'd be awake before then.
I smiled.
He knew me so well.
I know I'm gone and you're probably going to be curious and try to find me, but don't.
Trust me.
Was he murdering someone? Ooh, that sounded exciting.
Yes, I'm murdering someone, the note said, making me blink. And I mean it, don't go looking for me. You might've killed before, but you've never seen me do it, and you don't want to.
Yes, I did.
No, you don't.
Seriously... it was like he could read my mind before I even thought it.
Do not leave the house, Alice, he said to me. You remember what I said, you're not allowed to leave.
So just stay there, baby, okay?
I'll be back soon.
- Elias
I just tipped my head to the side.
Rules were meant to be broken, as they said.
And I was a rule breaker.
It was stupid how he thought I would listen. Listening was not my forte.
So I just walked straight toward the front door, and blinked when I found another note pinned to the wood.
Alice, please, listen for once. Stay here.
- Elias
Nah.
I opened the door and stepped down the front porch, immediately stopping when I found another note pinned to one of his banisters:
You're going to be the death of me, I swear. Go back inside.
- Elias
Nope.
