More Than One: A Smurf Story

Chapter 11

Destiny walked with Brainy in front of the group.

"Destiny?"

"Yes Brainy?" she hummed as they continued walking.

"Is your vision okay?"

"I was about to ask you the same thing. Why did you all ask which way to take as if there were multiple paths?"

"Because," Brainy started. "There were two clear paths: a left one and a right one. We had to stop because, in your conversation with Hefty, you never said there was a fork in the road." 

Brainy's voice had turned sour when he mentioned Hefty. Destiny looked down before taking Brainy's hand and squeezing it gently. 

"I only told him before anyone else because everyone else was asleep and we were up at night talking because-"

"Because you like him" Brainy stated as he dropped Destiny's hand.

Destiny stopped in her tracks as she watched Brainy continue walking. Her chest tightened as she felt her heart shatter. 

"W-What?" Destiny ran to catch up with him as she raised her voice. "Is that what you really think?! After I confessed my feelings for you before we went on this stupid adventure!?"

Brainy stopped as he turned and glared at her. "You talked to him before Papa OR Willow! You spoke to him before ME! You had the time to speak to any one of us before we left the village but you didn't!"

"What was I supposed to say Brainy?! Hey guys this is the path to take in case I basically die on you all again! Do you really think that is the best thing to say to people you love?"

"You had no problem saying it to Hefty" Brainy chided as he crossed his arms.

"I don't love him like that! Hefty is a brother! I pushed that forced label out of the way for you because of my feelings for you and only you! Why do you think I always pushed to find the time with my busy schedule just so I could come over and run experiments with you!?"

Brainy froze as he stared at Destiny. He felt like a complete idiot as he looked into Destiny's teary eyes. He traced the tears that rolled down her face and watched them drip from her chin and to the ground.

"Destiny I-"

"Drop it Brainy. You just told me how you truly feel about me without even truly saying it."

Destiny stormed away and Hefty ran after her, shoulder-checking Brainy as he passed. Brainy lowered his head as everyone passed him and continued on. He slowly turned and followed everyone from a distance as he tried to figure out how to make amends with Destiny.
