The day before the party, Jessica sent us a message in the team's group chat:
JessicaMalboyXOXO: Make sure you all are wearing black to my party.
JK.Kennedy: And why?
JessicaMalboyXOXO: Because! We're going to crash C Side's Halloween party as revenge for crashing ours.
JK.Kennedy: Uh, so what?
JessicaMalboyXOXO: Because we need to blend in with our surroundings! God, JK, you're such an idiot.
FootballJockTHOMAS: Ok Jessica, of course we'll wear black.
I rolled my eyes. Ever since they'd started dating, Thomas had become super clingy over Jessica. He'd defend her at any costs, no matter what it was against. He'd even pick her over Ryan and me sometimes.
glittermacy: Yeah I'll wear black.
YvonneABC123: What if my costume is already black ??
JessicaMalboyXOXO: Fine. Whatever.
RyanMarinoff: Aw c'mon, I already had a plan for my costume.
harriet_frank: What was your costume, Ryan?
RyanMarinoff: A mummy lol. Guess I'll have to be Count Dracula now :((
I shut my laptop. That was okay by me. I wasn't planning on wearing any kind of costume to Jessica's party, anyway. These days, I didn't know what was acceptable in the seventh grade social circle or what wasn't.
I'd already informed my mom I was going to a Halloween party, and she gladly let me go. But when I headed downstairs to go to the party in my black hoodie and jeans, she frowned.
"Is that what you're wearing?" she asked.
"Yeah, why?" I wanted to know.
"Oh, come on, Johnson. It's Halloween. You're a kid. Shouldn't you be dressing in something more fancy?"
"You mean like a costume?"
"Yes. A costume. It's not too late. I could take you out fast and get you one...or you could wear your Green Lantern one from last year."
"No thanks, Mom," I said, as I left the house. "I don't do costumes any more."
The party was in full swing by the time I got there. Jessica's place was all done up for the party. Expensive mannequin monsters lined the halls, like the kinds you get in those rip-off Halloween stores. There was a Frankenstein and a zombie bride and a witch. Porcelain jack-o-lanterns sat on tables and on the stairways, and banners were hung up on the ceiling and above our heads. A long buffet of food was pushed to the side, things like pizza and pasta. Speakers blasted out the latest hit pop songs, and kids everywhere were dancing or chilling out in the Malboys' hot tub on the patio.
Jessica came up to me and grabbed my shoulder, spinning me around.
"Woah," I said when I saw her. "What're you supposed to be?" She looked so sexy, in her flowy black crop top, super-tight skinny jeans, and black combat boots. She had a pair of ears on her head and a long, curvy tail attached to her butt.
"Catwoman, of course," she said, adjusting her ears. The light was dim and disco lights were going crazy all over the walls, but I could still tell that she was wearing a whole lot of black makeup on her eyes. Her lips were the color of blood and stood out from the rest of her dark getup.
"Follow me," said Jessica, and turned. She started walking, and I followed her. She left the house and went to the shed, me scurrying after her. There I saw the rest of the A Side team huddled around the Malboys' cars, which took up most of the space inside.
