Chasing down a purse thief midday after school in late January might not be everyone's hobby—neither was for Nora, but based on her motto; if no one's willing to, she has to step in. So she revved up the machine of her red scooter and began to chase down the thief at the highest speed available.
The thief glanced over his shoulder, eyes widening in surprise to see a young girl in hot pursuit. He revved his motorcycle, the engine roaring as he tried to shake her off. But the young girl was relentless, her scooter's electric power giving her an unexpected edge in the heavy traffic.
Avoiding the cars on Elysian City's highway was easy because of the slender shape of her scooter. Nora blinked and the thief had disappeared from her sight.
She stopped the scooter with a foot stomp, 'Three seconds.'
He glanced once more, but Nora was nowhere in his sight. The thief smirked behind his helmet, glancing back at the roadway—where he was gifted with the appearance of a red scooter from his right side, he was caught off guard, lost balance and skidded, his motorcycle crashing to the ground. The onlookers gasped as they watched the event kick in.
Nora walked closer while holding her scooter on the right, her shoulder-length blonde hair was a mess, "I nailed that drift." She flipped her hair, bent down, and took the purse that got pushed away due to the thief's sudden stop.
Shortly after, a police motorcycle arrived at the scene. The officer took off their helmet—it was a policeman, but his expression showed no signs of happiness. If anything, he seemed to be annoyed.
"What were you thinking, young lady?"
Nora bit her lips, "Ah– hey! What were YOU thinking?! Catch that thief, he's running away!" She pointed out. Mr Policeman ran and swiftly handcuffed the thief's hands, his body lying down. "Are you not gonna say anything?"
Mr. Policeman glanced at her.
"What?"
"Not anything?" She raised her eyebrows, Mr Policeman looked no less confused by her words. "Not even a thank you?" Nora scoffed.
"Oh. Thank you," he said half-heartedly, and she finally smiled. "I could've done that myself, I didn't need the help of a young lady like you. If you were to be hit by any vehicles here, who are the ones to blame?"
"If you're really worried about a little girl's wellbeing, at least say it nicely," she said. They gave each other an annoyed look. "And I'm no ordinary child you think you know."
"Then what are you? An alien?"
"That's too far," she took something from inside her brown jacket, a student ID Card. His mouth dropped slightly in the shape of her school logo, "Eight-grader of Vincentia Zaffre Academy, you must've heard me—Nora Aichat Ellis, head of VZA's CSI Club. 14 years old. My club helped with our school cyber attack last year, and the case of Melanie Donovan's disappearance. I know that this chase is not... connected with my records, but, I won't let you look down on me. So, I gave you some new information, this is my face!" Nora smiled faintly.
Mr. Policeman's face turned nervous, even so, he regained his composure and tried to look 'professional.' "Alright. Thank you. Now please–"
"I will. Have a nice day," Nora replied while she guided her scooter to the sidewalk, so the highway could be cleared from the remnants of the thief's motorcycle and scraps. As she walked near the sidewalk, a thought came to her mind;
'That Policeman's face was scary.' Sweats fell from her hand.
"Nora?" A familiar female voice called her out, she gazed through her brown eyes and found the face of her dear best friend. A girl whom she sees as the most charming and prettiest girl she has ever befriended, she has long wavy brown hair, and black roundish glasses, though shorter, Nora always thinks that she's fit for a model. "What are you doing here?"
"Valerie!" Her face lit up, and the girl's walk went faster. "I just chased down a purse thief, that over there. I was supposed to meet a client..."
"Meet where?"
"Well, where are we?"
"Uh, Srivicto University? Look up, there's a welcome sign," Valerie told her best friend. Nora let out a little 'Oh' as a reply, she had never been the type to have a walk, never ask directions from her, unless it was somewhere she always goes to. She didn't realize that her pursuit of the thief had led her to be in front of the university gate.
"Um, well, what are you doing here?"
"You know my Mother works here, right? In the engineering faculty, finance department. She takes care of if someone wants to pay for things, something like that, I guess. I always go here after school because my family doesn't let me go home by myself," she explained while fixing her black glasses.
Nora nodded, "You did say you don't go right home after school, but you never told me where your Mother works."
"Ah... sorry then. Then, are you going to meet your client or?"
"Wait, let me see the location she sent me," the blonde said. She looked through her phone while Valerie peeked over. "Oh wow, isn't this that cafe?" She pointed at the cafe across the way, Valerie confirmed her words, the location was clearly the same as the photo sent and the live location Nora got. "Then, do you wanna go there with me? Let's issue this case together, I mean, you're free at the moment too."
"Are we bringing this up to the club?"
"Uhh, no. At least not before I need bigger help. This is my personal client, not the club's. And anyway, your help will be much appreciated in an interview like this, mine doesn't work your way," she gave a fun smirk on her face. This, the look on her face was a secret between the two friends, a secret they don't tell others—aside from the CSI Club members. Valerie eventually agrees to her request. What the blonde said was true, an interview with a client will be easier to look thorough with the help of a person who can listen to the truths of others.
For her, the shadows talk.
