The first day of high school was always a mix of excitement and anxiety for most students, and Wei Ying was no exception. As she stepped through the gates of Red Maple High, she couldn't help but feel a flutter of nerves. The sprawling campus was filled with groups of friends reuniting after the summer break, while new students like herself wandered around, trying to find their way.

Wei Ying adjusted her backpack and looked down at her schedule. "Homeroom: Room 101," she murmured to herself. Determined to make a good impression, she made her way through the crowded hallways, dodging clusters of students.

When she finally found Room 101, she slipped inside and chose a seat near the middle. She took a deep breath and surveyed the room. Students were chatting animatedly, exchanging summer stories and making plans for the year ahead. Suddenly, the door opened again, and in walked a tall, confident-looking boy with tousled black hair and a kind smile. He glanced around the room before his eyes settled on the empty seat next to Wei Ying.

"Is this seat taken?" he asked, his voice warm and friendly.

Wei Ying shook her head, unable to find her voice for a moment. "No, it's free."

"Great, thanks," he said, sliding into the chair. "I'm Lan Zhan, by the way."

"I'm Wei Ying" she replied, finally managing to speak. She felt a blush creep up her cheeks as she realized she was staring.

The bell rang, and their homeroom teacher, Mr. Huang, began taking attendance and giving out instructions for the first day. As he droned on about school rules and expectations, Wei Ying found her thoughts drifting back to the boy sitting next to her. There was something about his easygoing manner and the way he seemed to instantly fit in that fascinated her.

Throughout the day, Wei Ying found herself glancing over at Lan Zhan whenever they shared a class. He seemed to know just how to engage with the teachers and other students, always wearing that friendly smile. During lunch, she watched as he joined a group of boys playing basketball, his laughter ringing out across the courtyard.

As the weeks went by, Wei Ying and Lan Zhan found themselves becoming friends. They often sat together in classes, shared notes, and even helped each other with homework. Wei Ying discovered that Lan Zhan was not only friendly but also incredibly kind and thoughtful. He always seemed to notice when she was having a bad day and would do small things to cheer her up, like sharing his favorite snacks or telling a funny story.

One crisp autumn afternoon, their computer teacher, Ms. Liu, assigned a group project.

"You'll be working in pairs to create a digital presentation," she announced. "Find a partner and get started."

Wei Ying looked around the room nervously, but before she could even consider who to ask, Lan Zhan turned to her with a grin. "Want to be partners?"

Wei Ying's heart skipped a beat. "Sure, I'd like that."

They spent hours in the computer lab over the next few weeks, working on their project and getting to know each other even better. Lan Zhan was full of surprises, always coming up with creative ideas and making Wei Ying laugh with his quick wit. She found herself looking forward to their time together more and more.

One evening, as they were wrapping up a particularly productive session, Lan Zhan leaned back in his chair and stretched.

"You know, Wei Ying, I'm really glad we got to be partners. This project has been a lot more fun with you."

Wei Ying felt a warmth spread through her chest. "Me too, Lan Zhan. I've enjoyed it a lot."

They shared a smile, and for a moment, it felt like they were the only two people in the room. As they packed up their things and headed out of the lab, Lan Zhan walked her to the bus stop. The sun was setting, casting a golden glow over the campus.

"See you tomorrow, Wei Ying," Lan Zhan said, giving her a wave as her bus arrived.

"See you tomorrow," Wei Ying replied, waving back.

As the bus pulled away, Wei Ying couldn't help but feel a sense of anticipation. She had made a friend in Lan Zhan, but deep down, she wondered if there could be something more. Little did she know, this was just the beginning of their story, a journey filled with laughter, surprises, and moments that would bring them closer than she could ever imagine.
