The summer had come to an end, and with it, Wei Ying and Lan Zhan returned to the familiar halls of Red Maple High for their final semester. The memories of the summer at the resort remained vivid, but they slipped back into their usual school routine. Lan Zhan, despite his deeper feelings for Wei Ying, believed she saw him only as a friend, and Wei Ying ,despite her love for Lan Zhan, felt he only cherished their friendship.

A week into the new school year, a new student transferred to their class. His name was Ethan, and he was tall, athletic, and had an easy charm that quickly made him popular. Wei Ying, always friendly and welcoming, was one of the first to befriend him.

“Hey, can I sit here?” Ethan asked on his first day, pointing to the empty seat next to Wei Ying in their math class.

“Of course!” Wei Ying replied with a warm smile. “I’m Wei Ying. Nice to meet you.”

“Nice to meet you too,” Ethan said, flashing a grin. “This place is pretty cool. Thanks for helping me settle in.”

Lan Zhan watched from a few rows back, his chest tightening as he saw Wei Ying and Ethan talking animatedly. He tried to ignore the pang of jealousy that surged every time Ethan made Wei Ying laugh.

Days turned into weeks, and Ethan became a regular fixture in Wei Ying’s life. They partnered up for projects, sat together at lunch, and often walked home together, chatting about everything and anything. Lan Zhan found himself increasingly left out, feeling a bitter sting each time he saw them together.

One afternoon, Lan Zhan caught up with Wei Ying in the hallway after school.

“Hey, want to hang out at the park later?” he asked, hoping for some quality time with his best friend.

Wei Ying hesitated. “I’d love to, but I already promised Ethan I’d help him with some assignments. Maybe tomorrow?”

“Sure,” Lan Zhan said, trying to mask his disappointment. “Tomorrow it is.”

As he watched Wei Ying walk away with Ethan, Lan Zhan’s heart sank. He felt an unfamiliar ache, realizing he missed the days when it was just the two of them. He didn't understand why seeing Wei Ying with Ethan bothered him so much. Was it just jealousy over losing his best friend, or was it something deeper?

Later that evening, Lan Zhan sat in his room, staring at his phone. He had countless photos of him and Wei Ying from the summer, each one a reminder of the bond they shared. He picked one from the lake, where they were both laughing, their arms around each other. It was his favorite photo, capturing a moment of pure happiness.

A knock on the door interrupted his thoughts. It was his mother.

“A-zhan, everything okay?” Mrs. Lan asked, concern etched on her face.

Lan Zhan sighed. “I don’t know, Mom. Things have been weird since school started. Wei Ying has been spending a lot of time with this new guy, Ethan. I know I should be happy for her, but I just feel… I don’t know, left out.”

Mrs. Lan sat down next to him, looking at the photo in his hand. “You care about a-Ying a lot, don’t you?”

“Of course, she’s my best friend,” Lan Zhan replied, though even as he said it, he knew it was more than that.

“Sometimes, when we care deeply about someone, we don’t realize how much until we feel like we’re losing them,” Mrs. Lan said gently. “Do you think it’s possible that your feelings for Wei Ying are more than just friendship?”

Lan Zhan looked at his mother, his heart pounding. “I… I don’t know. Maybe? I just don’t want to lose her.”

Mrs. Lan smiled. “You won’t lose her, a-zhan. But maybe it’s time to be honest with yourself about how you feel.”

The next day at school, Lan Zhan watched Ethan and Wei Ying laughing together in the cafeteria. He felt a mix of sadness and resolve. He knew he couldn’t keep pretending everything was fine. He had to talk to Wei Ying, to find out if there was a chance she felt the same way.
