Chapter ONE
Grace

I glance at the watch on my nightstand. 2:17 a.m., its neon green numbers practically screaming at me in the dark room.

I have been in bed since 11 last night, but the dark circles under my eyes say otherwise. People have been asking how I have been.

Is it that obvious?

I whistle a four note tune softly, hoping she hears my tune and comes to my aid.

I wait for a response.

After a minute or so, I hear a sigh.

"Here, boy." It doesn't take him long to jump up on the bed.  "I'm sorry I woke you up, Tanner."

His silhouette looks at me accusingly, as if what I've just said is nonsense.
"What?", I say after he keeps staring at me. He rests his head on my stomach and exhales softly.

I find myself relaxing, my breaths following his. I rub the base of his ears and he settles into bed.

"Oh I guess it's fine if you sleep in the bed tonight."

Maybe I do need some support right now.
