CHAPTER 22
Bradley
On the way home from the party, Max and I still had a lot of energy. We decided collectively to go to karaoke. When we arrived, the woman gave us a small room with a small stage. Max volunteered to go first, and I agreed. (Just to hear him sing, I was easily pleased).
He sighed into the microphone. "Baby, I'm yours, yours, yours. Baby, I'm yours, yours, yours." I smiled. "I know that you love me. Darling, you don't have to say it. You know you can trust me. It's okay, it's complicated. Nervous, trip over my words. You're so pretty, it hurts."
It was almost as if he changed the lyrics of the song to direct it about us. "Baby, I'm yours, baby, I'm yours, baby, I'm yours. I need something more, I'll pray to the Lord. That baby, I'm yours."
I truly was stupidly in love with this man. Surprisingly, his singing in here wasn't too bad. Perhaps I had been hypnotized. "Is it too late to see you? I love the view of your headlights. Wanna get to know you. Brought you to my house for the night. You're so pretty, it hurts."
He finished the song, seating himself right next to me. I held his hand for a quick second. I got up, making my way to the small stage. I pondered my options. There was one that stood out beyond the rest. Jolene. "This should be pretty special since it's one of the few things we have shared in common," I laughed slowly.
"Don't tell me, is it that song?"
"Just wait." The music started playing. "Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene. I'm begging of you, please don't take my man. Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene. Please, don't take him just because you can. Your beauty is beyond compare with flaming locks of auburn hair. With ivory skin and eyes of emerald green."
"Bradley—
—Your smile is like a breath of spring. Your voice is soft like summer rain, and I cannot compete with you, Jolene. He talks about you in his sleep, and there's nothing I can do to keep from cryin' when he calls your name, Jolene."
The song flew by, Max just sat watching me the entire time. He looked at me in awe and honestly, it was the best feeling ever; feeling loved.
"How did I do?"
"Darling, you did great. I have my next song choice."
I blushed. Of course, I wanted a compliment, but, every time he gave me one, I got flustered. "Go ahead." Max carefully walked up the few steps to the stage.
He made the room feel tight, like I was suffocating in his presence, except I liked it. I wanted to feel as close to him as possible. "Think I need someone older, just a little bit colder. Takes the weight off your shoulders. Think I need someone older. Baby, am I your little secret? Eighteen, I'm old enough to keep it."
Definitely directed. I wasn't that much older, was I?
"Yeah, guys my age just aren't the same. I'm young and that's okay. Think I need someone older, just a little bit colder. Takes the weight off your shoulders." Max got off the stage, stalking towards me with confidence I could only assume came from the song he was singing. He hunched over me, his breath was on my neck. "Think I need someone older. Darling, hold me while you wipe my tears. Falling, you say I'm wise beyond my years. Yeah, guys my age just aren't the same. I'm young and that's okay."
Just kiss me, I thought. Instead, he got up, letting me believe he would kiss me. He went back up on stage, finishing the song with his eyes right on mine. Suddenly, the tension fell heavy. Break it, I pleaded. God, I was turning into Max. Wanting something from him in the most normal of settings. I shrugged my tight buttoned-up shirt. Was it hot in here or was it just him?
There was a knock on the door. "Mr. Goof, karaoke time is up. Please have the room empty in five minutes." Max looked at me.
"I only paid for thirty minutes, oops," he chuckled. I laughed.
"It's okay, it was the best time I've had in a while."
"I can give you another," he winked. I would have been crazy to not accept that offer.
