Normally, the McDonald and Venturi family ate dinner together as a family, but since the Papadapolis wedding was scheduled that evening, they chose to enjoy a buffet style breakfast instead.
Derek and Casey sat parallel to one another as was customary. Although their positions remained the same as they had always been, the atmosphere had drastically changed. Ordinarily, Derek could find any reason to pick on Casey at the table, but when he felt forced to do so to keep up appearances with their folks, he faltered. Instead, he focused his energy on picking on Ed to maintain the status quo. Someone has to take one for the team.
"How was your soccer game, Liz?" Casey asked, trying to stay involved in her sister's life without being overbearing.
"We kicked the crap out of -"
"Lizzie McDonald, language!" Nora was outraged.
Derek's table manners over the years must have rubbed off on Lizzie, obviously influencing her in a negative way.
"Sorry, Mom. We won big time!" Lizzie corrected herself.
"Yay! I'm so happy for you." Casey said, reaching to give her sister a high-five.
"Molly Moscovitz was in tears by the end of the game!" Lizzie added, referencing her long-time opponent.
"Leaving your sworn enemy in tears? Now, that's my soccer star." Derek was proud of his younger stepsister and her determination to win.
Casey wasn't one to tear down her own opponents, but Molly was never one to play fair. If one loss of a soccer game brought the overly confident Molly to tears, then so be it. At least Lizzie's wins would always be just and earned.
"Edwin, I thought you were watching your weight. How is that pound of bacon helping?" Nora was off of Lizzie's back and on to her next victim at the table.
"Nora, there's a difference between a want and a need. I want six-pack abs; I need bacon," he chuckled.
"Nice one, Ed!" Edwin and Derek Venturi high-fived each other, their cheeks stuffed with greasy, delicious breakfast.
The joke even got a bit of a chuckle out of Casey.
"Casey? Laughing at one of my jokes? Are you feeling okay?" Edwin sounded semi-concerned.
"She's in a good mood after last night." Derek felt Casey kick him hard underneath the table, and he nearly choked on his bacon. "She snored like a baby after Ralph and Kendra's party," he added.
Nice save.
"I do not snore!" She played along with his teasing in order to keep their secret alive, but she desperately wanted to come out with the truth. Not the truth about sleeping with Derek, obviously, but about their relationship.
"This was Casey's face last night," Derek pretended to imitate her to get Edwin and Marti laughing.
"Knock it off, Derek," George ordered.
"Yeah, knock it off, Derek." Casey took the opportunity to tap his shoe under the table playfully, and surprisingly, he tapped back. Sure, it was a simple gesture, but Derek hated PDA.
