Twenty Years Later
"This is so typical of you guys to make me lose my appetite before dinner! I knew this was going to be some lovey dovey story."
"It's a story about how your father and I fell in love. You shouldn't have expected less."
Casey Venturi sat across from her husband, Derek Venturi, on opposite ends of the dinner table, reminiscing with their kids about the fairytale that started to bloom when they were both fifteen years old in this very same house.
It was bittersweet that their oldest, Derek Jr., had just turned fifteen. DJ was Derek reincarnated, both in looks and in attitude, and he despised hearing about his parents' love life. In contrast to DJ, Georgia Venturi, their spunky, blue-eyed eleven year old, was very invested in learning about her family history, particularly for her genealogy project that was bound to raise some questions. Their youngest child, Daisi, however, wasn't interested in anything other than dinner, and until she could get food in her stomach, she was sulking underneath the table by Casey's feet.
"Can we eat now?" Daisi whined.
"We're waiting on Grandma and Grandpa," Derek told her.
Nora and George had retired in Florida years ago but made frequent trips to see their kids and grandkids. Fortunately, they were able to fly home for Casey and Derek's anniversary.
Speaking of which, the doorbell suddenly rang, and the kids rushed to get the door.
"We're back!" Nora and George were practically tackled by their grandkids coming to greet them.
"We're so glad you guys could make it." Casey and Derek took turns hugging their parents. Behind their parents' shoulders, they noticed a few more familiar faces coming in.
"Happy Anniversary!" Edwin called out, carrying a bottle of wine.
"Twenty years with Derek, Casey? I'm shocked," Lizzie laughed.
"You and me both," Derek teased.
What was more shocking was that Derek was actually willing to celebrate twenty years together. For a man who said he hated anniversaries, he happily celebrated one every single year.
"Don't tell me you two made another bet on our relationship," Casey sighed.
"No, but we did bet on which one of us will find a spouse first. Ed and I are so focused on our careers that we might both lose the bet."
Lizzie taught animal science at Thompson High, offering free soccer lessons to the underprivileged youth on the weekends. Edwin worked alongside his sister as a psych professor, dealing with slackers like he and Derek used to be. Edwin, however, doesn't hesitate to send those troubled kids to the principal's office. (And go figure, the principal is Sheldon Schlepper).
"Bonjour!" Marti tossed off her scarf and placed it onto the coat rack.
Marti was doing well for herself, too, as she was traveling back and forth to Paris, helping run Emily's multiple high-end boutiques. Turns out, all of those years playing dress-up came in handy.
"Hey, Smarti," Derek called out.
"Hey, Smerek."
"Aunt Marti!" Marti lifted Daisi into her arms, greeting one of her favorite nieces. Looking at young Daisi was like looking at a mini mirror for Marti.
