A few days later, I settled in at my desk to review the latest evidence files, only to have my computer screen flicker and go black. Dread washed over me as lines of code began rapidly scrolling across the monitor -
Plague had hacked into my system.
Just when I thought he couldn't get any more unhinged, a video feed popped up, revealing Plague himself lounging in what looked like an extravagant study. He raised a glass of amber liquid in a mocking toast.
"Welcome to the show, detective," his distorted voice crackled through my computer's speakers. "Just a little peek into my world for you."
My mind raced -
was this a live feed from his lair?
If I could just trace the signal...
Signaling my team, I quickly explained the situation. We needed to move fast before Plague cut the transmission. Maybe, just maybe, this was the break in the case we'd been waiting for.
Within minutes, Viola, Yvie, and Julian had suited up and were coordinating with the cyber crimes unit to attempt a trace. I watched in tense silence as Plague paced around the study, ranting about his "grand plans."
"Soon, you'll see, detective," he purred, refilling his glass. "You and I are going to change the world."
A shiver ran down my spine - the depth of his delusion was terrifying. I had to put a stop to this before innocent lives were caught in the crossfire of his twisted fantasy
I remained silent, letting the tension build.
"No witty comeback?" he taunted. "Cat got your tongue, love?"
Still, I said nothing, picturing his jaw clenching behind that eerie mask of his.
There was a pause, then the unmistakable sound of shattering glass in the background.
"You see what you've driven me to, detective?" Plague snarled. "This evening was supposed to be special, a night just for us. But you've ruined everything!"
More crashing noises filtered through the phone as Plague's rage boiled over. I could envision the penthouse being torn apart - expensive furniture overturned, priceless artwork smashed to pieces.
"Is this what you want?" he roared. "For me to lose control? To give in to my darkest impulses?"
My heart pounded as his words took on an even more sinister edge.
Was he threatening me or himself?
With a bone-chilling laugh, Plague seemed to regain his composure. "Don't worry, my dear. This is merely the opening salvo. You and I...we're destined for something far greater than this little game of cat-and-mouse."
The line went dead, leaving me shaken and questioning everything I thought I knew about this dangerous man's obsession. One thing was certain - Plague wasn't going to stop until he got what he wanted.
Just then, Yvie gave me a thumbs up - they'd locked onto Plague's location. But as I looked at the address on the screen, my brow furrowed in confusion.
It was the address of a high-end hotel in downtown.
"What the hell was that about?" Julian asked, nodding towards my computer where Plague's unhinged rant had just played out.
I shook my head slowly. "I don't know...I think he invited me to something?"
The guys exchanged bewildered looks.
"At a hotel?" Viola raised an eyebrow. "That's one hell of a booty call."
"Dude, don't even joke about that," Yvie grimaced. "This is Plague we're talking about."
I let out a frustrated sigh, raking my hands through my hair. "I'm just as confused as you are. But we can't pass up this chance to finally bring him in."
After that chilling phone call from Plague, I knew his obsession had taken an even darker turn. I tried to push it from my mind and focus on the case, but he always seemed to be one step ahead.
