The ballroom had fallen into a hush of anticipation as the host stepped aside, allowing the grand finale to commence. I tensed in my seat, fingers tightening around my clutch where my weapon was concealed. One wrong move from Plague and this would turn into a bloodbath.
Suddenly, the main doors burst open and a terrified young woman stumbled in, tears streaking her beautifully made-up face. She clutched a tattered papers.
"P-please!" she sobbed, falling to her knees. "Somebody help me!"
The crowd murmured in shock and confusion as two burly men dressed as staff emerged, grabbing the woman roughly by her arms.
"How dare you interrupt these proceedings, you foolish girl!" one of them snarled.
That's when Plague appeared, seeming to materialize from the shadows like a specter. With a few deft movements, he disarmed the men and pulled the trembling woman to her feet.
"Unhand her," he commanded, his voice dripping with disdain. "This is a place of celebration, not cruelty."
I watched in disbelief as Plague gently guided the young woman to a chair, wrapping his jacket around her shaking form. What game was he playing at now?
The host stepped forward, face red with anger and embarrassment. "How dare you interfere! This is my event and that...that wretched girl will be dealt with accordingly!"
"Will she?" Plague's tone took on a dangerous edge as he turned to face the sputtering man. "And just what transgression has she committed to warrant such treatment, hmm?"
With a dramatic flourish, he produced a small remote from his pocket and aimed it towards the large screen behind the stage. It flickered to life, revealing security footage that made my blood run cold.
The host, laughing uproariously as he shoved the same young woman into a supply closet. His meaty hands ripping the papers out her hands and tossing it. It looked like he mouthed something.
"Prove it in Court" before shoving her roughly.
A collective gasp rose from the crowd as the horrific scene played out. I could feel all eyes turning towards the host, who had gone deathly pale.
"You see?" Plague's voice rang out, laced with contempt. "The true monster is not the frightened girl, but the lecherous coward who thought he could take what he wanted through force. Explain to them how those papers hold evidence of recent death due to your neglance, and how this charity is just a way for you to steal more money"
In an instant, the mood in the ballroom shifted from shock to outrage. Guests began hurling insults and accusations at the host, who could only sputter uselessly in response.
As for Plague, he simply adjusted his mask and turned towards the exit, leaving the young woman in the protective embrace of some of the other guests. Our eyes met for the briefest moment, his gaze inscrutable.
Then, just like that, he melted back into the chaos he had created.
I could scarcely believe what I had just witnessed. Plague, the sadistic criminal mastermind, had played the role of heroic savior. But why? Another game, another ploy to throw me off balance?
One thing was certain - his obsession had taken a strange, dangerous turn. And I had no idea what sort of madness could be lurking around the corner.
The ballroom descended into pandemonium after Plague's shocking revelation. Guests turned on the host in a frenzy, hurling insults and objects until he was a cowering, bloodied mess on the stage. I watched in stunned disbelief as the supposed villain made his exit, leaving devastation in his wake.
"Y/N? Y/N, come in!" Julian's frantic voice crackled in my earpiece, pulling me back to reality. "We've breached the perimeter. What's your status?"
"I'm okay," I managed, already pushing my way through the enraged crowd towards the exit. "But Plague...he was here. Then he just disappeared."
"What? After all that crazy build up, he just rabbited?"
"Not exactly..." I quickly recounted the insane events that had played out - the young woman, the damning video, and Plague's bizarre act of vigilante justice against the host.
There was a heavy pause on the other end of the comms. "That sick bastard was just toying with us all along, wasn't he?"
Maybe. Or maybe there was something more twisted at play here. Plague's obsession seemed to be spiraling into uncharted territory, making his actions increasingly erratic and harder to predict.
By the time I made it outside, the rest of the team had already secured a perimeter, medics tending to the battered host as he was loaded into an ambulance. Julian and the others rushed over, a mixture of relief and confusion etched on their faces.
"You see him? Did he get away?" Viola demanded.
I could only shake my head numbly. "He was just...gone. Like a ghost."
We swept the hotel and surrounding area, but found no trace of Plague's whereabouts. The security footage had been completely wiped, any potential evidence destroyed. It was like he had vanished into thin air.
Hours later, after the scene had been processed and statements taken, I found myself staring vacantly at the incident board. Plague's mugshot, that haunting half-mask, seemed to bore straight through me.
What game was he playing? Why put on such a twisted performance, only to disappear without a trace? Was it all just another ploy to unsettle me, to pull me deeper into his deranged obsession?
"Hey, you okay?"
I turned to see Julian, concern etched in the lines around his eyes. The rest of the team had already headed home to catch a few hours of sleep before our next stint.
"Define okay," I sighed, rubbing my temples. Tonight's events had left me more unmoored than ever.
Julian gave me a sad smile and squeezed my shoulder. "We'll get this lunatic. Maybe not today, but we'll get him."
"I hope you're right, Julian. Because at this point...I'm not sure any of us really know what we're dealing with anymore."
As my partner headed out, I turned back to the board, my gaze locking with Plague's cold, lifeless eyes. There was something deeper going on here, a twisted game that had only just begun.
And I had an unsettling feeling that I was the one being played for a fool.
