────── SHE WAS RUNNING.That's how the dreams always began—Cassie running through an abandoned garden, desperate to escape something lurking in the shadows. The once-vibrant flowers were now withered and gray, their brittle petals crumbling beneath her bare feet. She was in a white dress, a stark contrast against the decay, but a dark red stain marred the fabric, spreading like a dark secret.
The air was thick and suffocating, pressing against her chest as she sprinted through the maze of twisted branches and crumbling stone. The thorns of dead roses clawed at her ankles, but she ignored the pain, her focus only on fleeing. Keep running. That was her mantra, the only thought anchoring her to the fleeting hope of escape. If you keep running, you won't have to look back. If you keep running, they can't catch you.
The gate loomed ahead, rusted iron bars twisted in grotesque shapes, an ancient lock dangling precariously. She could see freedom just within reach. If she could just climb over—
Suddenly, thick vines shot out from the shadows, wrapping around her ankles with a vice-like grip, yanking her down. She fell hard, the ground meeting her with a brutal thud, breath stolen by the impact. Dirt filled her mouth as she gasped, nails digging into the earth, her body instinctively fighting against the pull of the garden.
"You will never escape, Cassiopeia..."
The voice slithered through the air like smoke, cold and unsettling. It wrapped around her mind, squeezing until it felt like her thoughts were unraveling.
"Home is where the darkness waits, little flower..."
Another voice joined, high and haunting, a whisper that dripped with malevolence. Home. That word echoed, a cruel reminder of what she couldn't escape.
Her vision blurred, and she blinked rapidly, blood seeping from her eyes, warm and thick. The vines tightened, dragging her back to where the shadows hung, where something waited just out of sight.
"This is your legacy, your doom..." The voices intertwined, a twisted chant that made her skin crawl. "You belong to the darkness, Cassiopeia. Forever entwined with fate. Forever, forever, forever."
She thrashed against the ground, but her screams were swallowed by the garden, lost to the echoes of the mocking voices. They laughed—cold, hollow sounds that chilled her to the bone.
"The prophecy calls you back... You cannot deny it."
Her heart raced, pounding against her ribs as they continued their taunting song, a melody of despair that reverberated through her very being. The garden would keep her. She would never escape.
