Dark blue overcast covered the darkening skies and the sounds of roaring thunderstorms in the distance. I was in no hurry to get home and shelter myself from the incoming rain as I was safe from getting soaked in the cafe at my local bookstore.
The smell of coffee and the glue that kept the pages of all of the old books together permeated the air I was smelling and breathing in. It was cold and wet outside but here, it was warm and cozy enough for me to find relaxation in my reading. The book I was reading was the infamous epic poem "The Divine Comedy" by Dante Alighieri. I have become so engrossed in the book that I have been reading it day and night. As I took a sip of my coffee, I looked off my page for a brief second to notice a woman staring at me before she quickly looked away as if to pretend not to look at me.
I decided to test and see if she was looking at me so I pretended to read for a little bit and out of my peripheral vision, I sure enough saw her look back at me. I put my bookmark in closed my book and looked up at her. She quickly looked down as she was shy and I decided to at least break the ice between us. I got up from my seat and sat at her table and she immediately tensed up as she looked nervous.
Y/n: hey it's alright, I ain't gonna call you a weirdo for staring at me but I am curious as to why.
She relaxed for a bit before speaking while not making eye contact and it looked like she was having a hard time doing so.
????: Sorry I just couldn't help but notice the book you were reading. It's one of my favorites.
Y/n: oh really, I just started not too long ago and now I'm on Purgatorio and close to starting Paradiso.
I saw her smile but still didn't make eye contact.
????: wow really? When I started, it took me some time to finish the inferno. I haven't started Purgatorio because I'm taking a break but also I started writing poems.
Y/n: oh really? I love poetry myself.
She became interested and slowly but surely made eye contact with me as I became a welcoming presence.
????: that's amazing! My favorite poets are Robert Frost, Edgar Allan Poe, Walt Whitman, Shakespeare, Homer, Virgil, and Dante Alighieri.
Y/n: wow, you must be really into poetry to know all of those names huh?
????: yeah, I've been writing poems in my journal but I forgot to bring it with me.
Y/n: I think it was best to have left it as a storm is brewing outside. By the way, I've never got your name.
Olivia: my name is Olivia and you are?
Y/n: Y/n, say I just noticed that were the only ones here besides the staff.
Olivia looked around to confirm that I was right.
Olivia: oh yeah, well it is a Friday so not many people are out here spending time in the bookstore and more so at home or out with friends or partying.
