Blood pooled around the dead body that lay in the middle of the lounge room floor. The body already cold from the blood loss and the once cream carpet was stained with murder.
Jessica stopped immediately in her tracks as she walked through the front door and assessed the scene that lay before her. Her breath caught in her throat, heart beating erratically and her body began to shake. Jessica's aunt was dead. A kitchen knife stuck out from her motionless body.
On instinct, Jessica's hands flew up and covered her mouth, in fear she may make a noise that would alert the attacker to her presence. Her eyes darted around the room; ears pricked up listening for any indication that the attacker was still in the house. Everything was still.
Without a second thought, Jessica sprinted from the house, with nothing but her school backpack. Tears trickled down her cheeks. She didn't look back. Her anxiety told her if she did, she would see him. That he would catch her.
It was obvious to Jessica what had happened in the house. No-one needed to confirm her nightmare. She knew what she had to do.
Run.
Run away and not look back.
He had found her.
