Evie had hauled up in her room for most of Saturday studying, except for a short break to make herself a sandwich for lunch. By six o'clock, her brain was fried, and she was debating calling it quits for the day when there was a knock on her door. She knew it was Owen as the rest of the family had not come home yet.
"Come in," Evie called.
Owen stalked into the room and wandered over to the chair in the corner of the room and sat down facing Evie where sat. He took in her opened science textbook on the bed.
"Studying still?" he wondered aloud.
Evie closed the textbook and looked up at Owen.
"Finished for the day actually," Evie replied.
"Mum rang," Owen announced. "They've decided to have dinner out with Melissa's parents and the girls. That leaves you and me on our own for dinner. I've ordered us some pizzas, they should be here soon. I hope that's okay."
"Yes, of course," Evie smiled appreciatively, "Thank you."
As if on cue, the front door bell rang.
"That will be our dinner," Owen proclaimed, standing up and going to answer the door.
Evie followed Owen downstairs. While he went to pay for the pizzas, Evie found some plates and filled some glasses with coke.
The smell of hot, fresh pizza wafted into the kitchen as Owen returned with two square boxes.
"Why don't we watch a movie while we eat?" Owen suggested.
Evie nodded and went to collect the plates and drinks to take them into the lounge room.
"Don't worry about the plates," Owen said, nudging his head in their direction, "We can just eat out of the boxes."
Evie smirked at his suggestion and left the plates on the table, carrying only the large glasses. She placed the drinks down on the coffee table in the middle of the room. Owen placed the pizza boxes on the floor and sat on the ground, leaning against the couch.
"What do you want to watch?" Owen asked, reaching for the remote.
Evie settled on the floor on the other side of the boxes, crossing her legs underneath her.
"I don't mind. You choose."
"That's a trick, isn't it?"
"What is?" Evie giggled at his assumption.
"You say you don't care, but if I choose wrong you will sit there disinterested the entire movie or complain. All women do it. Kelly is the worst for it."
"Honestly, I don't care what we watch. I wouldn't even know what's out now to pick from."
"How about a comedy?" Owen suggested selecting from the menu on the television screen.
"As long as it's not a horror or suspense."
Owen eyed Evie, wondering if her statement was just a passing comment of her movie preferences or if it had something to do with her past.
Opening both boxes between them, Owen waited for Evie to choose a slice first.
"There's a pepperoni and a chicken," Owen indicated towards the pizzas.
"What, no pineapple?" Evie mocked as she reached for a slice of the chicken pizza.
"You don't put pineapple on a pizza," Owen said with all seriousness as he took a slice of the pepperoni.
"It adds some sweetness," Evie replied, taking a bite of her slice.
"Fruit does not belong on pizza," Owen stated once more before eating his own slice.
