july 2024, real life.

the four had arrived at the hospital in the morning, they had gone straight from the airport. chris had never been to calgary, nor met any of kylie's extended family. he walked in, and felt like he was intruding.

as they entered the room, a nurse came out to identify eliza and kylie. they were escorted to a private lounge, leo and chris trailing behind.

the two girls were sat down, and their stomach sank. they were too late.

"your mother and father were badly struck by a drunk driver last night. they experienced many internal injuries. your mother, we could not find any brain activity. we ran many tests, and while her heart is still beating, we have declared her brain dead."

kylie stopped listening, the warped voice of the doctor's condolences faded in and out. eliza grabbed kylie, as tears streamed down her face. kylie stood there, unable to move, unable to feel. she just stood there staring at the wall, everyone moved around her, chris put his hand on her shoulder. she couldn't move. if she moved, it was real. it needed to be a nightmare, she needed to wake up, please someone pinch her.

kylie's mind raced, "and my father..."

"we did everything we could, but he was gone before he arrived."

"you told me, someone told me- told me that my mother was worse than my father. someone lied, because this is fucking horrible, this is so wrong. i don't even get to say goodbye, to laugh with them one last time. they're gone, they're really gone..." kylie collapsed as she yelled out in tears, "it's not fair."

"i know baby," chris moved to the floor, holding her.

"it's not fair...."

leo held eliza's hand tightly, as she had tears streaming down her face.

"what's our next step then, what can we do now?" eli asked trying to remain calm. she was always the more rational one who looked at the bigger picture.

"is your mother an organ donor?"

"no, you're not chopping her up," kylie shook her head.

"kylie, you know that's what she would have wanted."

"we can discuss this later, i'll give you guys some time to process all of this, if you have any questions we are here for you," the doctor gave a sympathetic nod before leaving the room.

"they're really gone..." kylie still was sat on the floor wrapped in chris,

"i know.... but we will get through it."

"eliza i haven't caught a break since last fucking december. i don't know why i try anymore, everything can never just happen for me. it's so fucked, i don't get the point anymore... i don't know why i love anymore, i don't know why. i don't know why i am that i am, and why im cursed, why ive had a lifetime of hurt in the last year. they're gone and i wasn't even here to say goodbye," kylie shook her head.

"kylie it's not your fault," eliza was heartbroken at her sister.

"it's my curse, i think you guys all need to get me out of your lives," kylie stood up and walked to the door.

"ky, what are you doing?" chris questioned.

"it'll be better if im not here," and kylie walked out of the hospital room.
