this was supposed to drop on his birthday, but you know.
life.

*two months later*

"Happy birthday Steeluhhhh." I whisper as I slip a piece of paper in his notebook. He smiled shyly and looked back down at his hands.

Oh shit, my bad. Let me catch you up.
Over the months, Steez and I got to know eachother better. Well, we talk more and more everyday. School let out and that was basically our main connection, so we ended up getting social networks (I had to convince him, he isn't too big on that seperate life on the internet shit) and numbers. He sounded different when he first called me. His voice was... Deep. REAAAAAAALLY DEEP. I don't know how or why if got that deep, but I loved it. The way he said my name. The way he laughed when I stuttered when I yell whenever I get pissed off at him. I knew he had to look different, so I told him about FaceTime and he called me IMMEDIATELY after. When he answered that phone, my jaw dropped. Long story short, he lost weight and his hair grew out, and uh, his face was so goddamn-

ANYWAY. Uh, back to the story line.

Today was his birthday. He usually doesn't celebrate it any different than he celebrates every other day, but I urged him to actually have fun today. He said no, but when I told him I'll hang out with him the whole day his whole attitude changed. First, we went to the studio and he recorded this one song. I don't exactly remember the words, because he kept looking at me every other line and I kept getting lost in his eyes. When we sat down and listened to it, that's when I slipped in that piece of paper inside of his notebook. Don't ask me what it is. You'll find out.

Second, we went to sweet frog. Steez said he never tried frozen yogurt but I ensured him that would be the best frozen treat he ever tasted.

"You know you lying, man." He groaned, leaning back in the car seat.
"Stop geeking. You never tried it. I did. How you gon' tell me what I tasted and you didn't? Trust me. It's awesome." I said.
"Prove it." He whispered. I shivered as he placed his hand under my chin. I quickly grabbed his hand and took him inside the restaurant.

We went inside and got cups, and I showed him how to get the flavors and toppings and what not. He got the same thing I did, since he really didn't know what to get.

After 10 minutes of Steez not knowing what to do, he finally insisted on paying for our little treat because he felt bad for "the agonizing process I had to go through with him". I honestly didn't mind, because he's such a quiet and kind person, and it was pretty cute watching him being slightly confused with how to get the froyo out of the machines.

We sat down all the way in the corner away from everybody and ate. I was too focused on my yogurt to notice that Steez was quiet. Not as quiet as he always is, but a little too quiet for my liking. I grabbed his hand, making him jump a little.

"Calm down... it's just me." I whispered. He sighed in relief, remembering that it was only me.

"I...I-I'm sorry. I was just lost in my thoughts." He exclaimed, running his fingers through his hair. I knew something was wrong, so I took his hand and decided to take our snack to go.

He insisted on driving me home, so I got in his car and strapped myself in the seat. He turned the car on and pulled off. This would usually be the part where I turn on the radio and Steez and I smile at each other and start singing obnoxiously. That's not even how it went today, and I don't know why... he just muted the radio and turned down the road we always go down when we talk about serious things. He slowed the car down and pulled over by the tree that we used to study by during free period because he didn't want people making fun of me for hanging out with him.

"Jamal, what's wrong?" I asked. He tightened up his jaw and relaxed his shoulders. He knew that I was worried at this point, because I rarely call him by his government.

"Do you want to bash your head in a mirror and see what happens? Like... see if you enter a new universe, have the illest out of body experience and you don't even have to be high you know..." He paused for a second. "Like... that's the closest thing to death but you don't actually want to die, because even though nobody gives a fuck about you, you have the will power to take that one person you always wanted to spend the rest of your existence with..."

I just stared at him. He unbuckled his seat belt and climbed in the back seat. I did the same and sat next to him. I don't know what's wrong with him but I'm always here. He turned his head towards me and smirked.

"When I die, I want you to be the only one at my funeral. You were the only one that ever cared." He grabbed my hand and kissed it, making me just want to grab his face and kiss him over and over and over, and the ending credits will roll as the prologue plays...

fuck.
