Sand kicked up and sprayed behind Cecelia Roberts as she grinded to shift the car into drive, pulling out of a run-down gas station just north of the United States-México border, a stick of jerky in her her mouth and a coca-cola situated between her thighs, freezing her legs.
Cece's rusted, red 1968 Camaro Z28 cruised and clunked up Interstate 10, out of El Paso, and into New Mexico, her red-brown auburn hair flowing in thin wispies against the heavy wind and refulgent in the setting sun.
Texas was now finally behind her, after two slow days of driving from Fort Worth's tri state along Interstate 20. She turned up the volume dial, 'Proud Mary' filling her pierced ears full of Creedence's sweet melodies for another night. To Cecelia's left, the deep orange sun descended below the horizon. The New Mexico desert to her right, with dehydrated hills reflecting the oncoming darkness.
Looking down at the watch adorning her wrist, it was just past nine. Cece's mother would be in bed, covered in her quilts, up and worrying about her only child, stressing frantically, while her dad would be unbothered and lay snoring next to his wife, having already gotten over his little girl going west to California.
