klaus and caroline met up the day after caroline sent the last letter. just as she suggested, they had hot, crazy sex, but klaus didn't get the "more" that he wished for. instead, caroline continues to push him away. she acts as if she wants nothing to do with him, but deep down, she knows that she's falling desperately in love with the killer.
she always says that she tries to see the good in people, but sometimes the bad weighs a lot more than the good, and it doesn't balance out. she wishes that she didn't think of klaus as such a bad person. she wishes that she could run off into the sunset with him (with their daylight rings on, of course) without feeling any regret or guilt afterwards. she wishes that she didn't have to carry around the guilt that she experienced ever since she broke her and stefan's wedding engagement.
when she told stefan the news, he felt crushed. he couldn't control his rage or sadness and decided to switch off his emotions, as he usually did when the guilt and sadness became too much to bear, resulting in his inevitable ripper lifestyle. caroline doesn't know this yet; she thinks he just left town, but she'll find the trail of bodies and figure out what's going on sooner or later.
klaus, on the other hand, is relishing the fact that he was able to interact with caroline again, and he knows that it won't be the last time they see each other. he decided to stop sending letters to her. he knew he was capable of thinking of something better than sending silly love letters to prove his undying love for caroline, and if anyone stands in his way, he will have no trouble tearing their heads off or draining them of their blood.
perhaps he will become an even worse ripper than stefan, tearing all mundane and supernatural creatures apart until only him and caroline are left. maybe then, klaus assumes, she will lose all feelings of regret or denial and finally admit that she loves him.
or maybe he will respect caroline's love for goodness and human emotions and wait for her patiently. after all, he's got all the time in the world.
