The descendants of Bharata flourished under righteous and intelligent kings in the ancient kingdom of Hastinapura, nestled beside the sacred Ganga river. Their valor and moral rectitude painted a clear picture of prosperity and tranquility across Bharatavarsha. The city, an architectural wonder, was fortified and teeming with life, promoting trade, science, and the arts. Founded on moral values, Hastinapura symbolized both spiritual and material prosperity. The kingdom, upheld by the king's efforts to maintain justice, mediate conflicts amicably, and celebrate rich culture through festivals and acts of devotion, became a beloved representation of harmony and prosperity.

King Shantanu and Ganga's Divine Union:

King Shantanu of Hastinapura was a pillar of strength and integrity throughout this era of prosperity. He ruled over a prosperous kingdom, and his name lived on as a model of kingship throughout history. However, beneath the surface of this perfect nation was a story intertwined with both mortal pain and supernatural intervention.

In his youth, Shantanu had gained the respect of both gods and humans for his courage and discernment. But in issues of the heart, he remained unfulfilled despite all of his achievements. His encounter with the goddess Ganga, known for her ethereal beauty, happened during one of his hunting adventures by the holy Ganga river.

Ganga arrived before Shantanu like a vision from the sky, enchanting him with her otherworldly allure and celestial elegance. She captivated Shantanu with her brilliant presence, and he found himself drawn to her, his heart thumping with an unfathomable longing. Their paths crossed at that timeless instant, amid the sound of the rustling leaves and the murmurs of the river.

Shantanu was so infatuated with Ganga that he asked for her hand in marriage despite being fully aware of the difficulties that would accompany such a relationship. Ganga consented to become his queen on the proviso that Shantanu must never question her conduct, no matter what happened. Ganga knew the difficulties that lay ahead.

Early in their marriage, Shantanu and Ganga experienced unmatched bliss. Each child born to them  was a celebration of life and love. But a gloomy prophecy that predicted the royal couple's inevitable separation and the fate of their children cast a cloud over their bliss.

Over time, Ganga gave birth to multiple children for Shantanu, all of whom were destined for greatness in the afterlife. But soon after their birth, Ganga was forced to return their children to the river's embrace because of her divine obligations and the laws of the cosmos. Shantanu's heart ached more deeply with every child that departed, his sorrow growing with each one.

The cycle of births and losses continued until the birth of their eighth child, a son who would later be known as Devavrata. As fate would have it, Shantanu, unable to bear the thought of losing another child, confronted Ganga, demanding an explanation for her actions. In a moment of divine revelation, Ganga revealed the truth behind her seemingly cruel actions—their children were not lost but reincarnated in their next lives to fulfill great destinies.

Moved by Shantanu's plight and touched by his unconditional love, Ganga bestowed upon him a choice—to either accept her actions and continue their journey together or question her and risk losing everything they held dear. Understanding the weight of her words and the magnitude of his decision, Shantanu made a solemn vow to never question Ganga's actions, regardless of the consequences.

Following the departure of their children, Ganga left Hastinapura, leaving King Shantanu in a condition of deep sadness and isolation. His heart was heavy with grief over the death of his child, where the joy of parenthood had once resided. In spite of this, the kingdom of Hastinapura prospered under his wise and just reign, partly due to the unwavering assistance of his eldest son, Bhishma.
