The air crackled with anticipation, each puff of my curling iron adding to the symphony of excitement. Tonight, I was going to introduce Irene to Luxx. It felt like a carefully orchestrated play, a scene choreographed by Daya and myself. We'd been hoping to create a spark between my sister and Daya's coworker. My reflection in the mirror gave back a confident smile. I was ready.
I smoothed down my dress, a tight-fitting number that hugged my curves. It felt good to be dressed up, to feel the confidence that came with a night out. The quiet apartment felt strangely empty without Daya. He was working tonight and I couldn't wait to see him at his work. I loved seeing him in his element, all charming smiles and effortless banter.
Irene's arrival was a welcome interruption. "You look great, Bosco," she said, her voice full of a nervous energy that mirrored my own. She was wearing that beautiful scarlet dress she'd been hesitant to wear, the one that clung to her curves and highlighted her hazel eyes. Her usual apprehension seemed to be absent tonight, replaced by an almost childlike excitement.
The Uber arrived, and we set off for The Wild Steer. The restaurant was a chaotic symphony of clinking glasses, animated conversation, and the sizzling promise of juicy steaks. The air was thick with the aroma of wood smoke and sizzling fat, a familiar and comforting scent that always brought back childhood memories of family dinners and now where I had met the love of my life.
We were seated at a small table tucked away in a corner, the perfect spot for an intimate conversation. My eyes scanned the room, searching for Daya. I spotted him almost immediately, his tall frame easily distinguishable amidst the crowd. He was leaning over the counter, engaging in easy conversation with a coworker. My heart did a little flip.
Suddenly, I saw him nudge someone in the arm. The person turned, a bright smile on their face, and my breath caught. It was Luxx. Daya winked at me, a silent confirmation that everything was going according to plan.
Luxx moved with an almost feline grace, their tall, slender frame projecting confidence. They made their way towards us, a gentle smile playing on their lips. "Hi, ladies," they said, their voice a pleasing baritone. "I'm Luxx. Daya told me I might want to say hello to you guys."
"It's nice to meet you, Luxx," Irene replied, her voice surprisingly steady. She was looking at him with an intensity that surprised me.
A conversation began, a beautiful mix of shared smiles, casual compliments, and witty comments. I watched them, a silent observer. Luxx was charming, witty, and engaging. They complimented Irene on her dress, something that impressed me deeply, and they ended up discussing theatre, a shared passion that Irene had confided in me about. Luxx seemed genuinely interested, asking questions and sharing some of their own acting experiences.
My heart swelled with joy. I could see the confidence blooming in Irene, a confidence that had been hidden beneath layers of self-doubt and a fear of the world. She was shining, and it was all thanks to Luxx.
As Daya walked past our table taking an order, I gave him a wink. His eyes met mine, and he gave me a knowing smile. He understood, the unspoken language of love passed between us in that crowded room.
Daya brought us over our food, Irene looking at him as if he was the greatest thing in the world. "Hi ladies," he grinned putting our plates down infront of us. "How was Luxx then?" Daya grinned at us both.
"Pretty damn perfect," I say raising an eyebrow, looking to Irene for her input. "I liked them, a lot," she grinned back. Daya reached into his back pocket, bringing out a slightly crumpled piece of paper.
He slid it on the table to Irene, smirking. "Someone was too shy to give you this," he said softly looking over towards me smiling. Irene opened it up, revealing Luxx's number and a small heart written on it.
"They really love that dress by the way," Daya added before starting to slowly walk away so we could eat. "They told all the chefs how beautiful you look in it, they're all jealous they cant leave the kitchen to see for themselves,".
"I'll see you tonight baby," I said softly blowing a kiss to him as he walked away.
Irene's smile was plastered on her face, she beamed from ear to ear. Hurriedly entering Luxx's number into her phone, worried anything would happen to the small piece of paper she was clutching onto.
We ate our food, and laughed till our sides hurt. It was amazing to see Irene in her element again. She had always been a role model to me, she was so brave, and so strong.
We finished up eating, and rather than our bill coming over, a receipt was brought to us. "Someone already paid for you ladies," the waiter said smiling, pointing to a heart with a small letter D and L drawn beside it.
I scanned the room for Daya, to find him already looking at me. I blew him another kiss before I took Irene's hand and we headed out the resturant together.
"Will you be okay getting home?" I say softly as I booked my Uber. "Yeah I'll be fine, Atleast I'll have some entertainment tonight," she grinned pointing to Luxx's contact in her phone.
"I might even try and go back to my place tonight, if it's too much I'll go to yours to sleep, but I'm going to see how I go." I smile and squeeze her hands, "just let me know if you need me okay?" I smile as I watch her head off into her own Uber.
The apartment is Lonley when i get back, I text Daya so he knows I'm home safe then I debate what I should do to fill the time until he is home. I pick up my notebook, and head to the bathroom to start running myself a bath, I dig a bath bomb out the back of one of Daya's cabinets, hoping he wasn't planning on using it anytime soon as I drop it down into the water.
I let the bath fill up, before I strip and slide down into the boiling water. Letting it relax my body as I feel it lapping up to my neck. Although nothing could ever replace the warmth Daya provided, a bath came relatively close. I closed my eyes, trying my best to relax, praying the time would pass by quickly.
I eventually get out of the bath, the cool air sending shivers through my body. I wrap myself up tightly in a towel, before I lay down on the couch to watch some TV.
I didn't even feel myself fall asleep, but I woke with a start, Daya's massive frame looming over me, tucking a blanket over me.
"Shit," I mumble softly, "what time is it?". "It's after 11 baby, you must've been sleeping for a couple hours. Cmon you're freezing." He said softly, concern evident in his voice, as he put his arms out for me so he could pick me up.
He carried me through to bed, my body shivering. He put me under the covers, pulling one off his sweatshirts out the closet and putting it over me, before taking the damp towel off of my body. And handing me a clean pair of boxers.
Daya stripped down too, the faint smell of meat and smoke lingering on his body. I curled up against him as he rubbed my back, desperately trying to heat me up.
My hard nippled pressed against Daya's sweatshirt, his eyes glanced down me and noticed them, "you're daft baby, who falls asleep with the air conditioner on in a damp towel," I smile up at him, "oops," I say smiling, as I hide my face in his neck. Wanting to minimise the space between us.
"Thank you for dinner tonight," I smile, "it was so good." Daya beams down at me, "you are so welcome, i can't help but pay for pretty girls dinners," I push him playfully, "it better just be my dinner you're paying for then!"
He grins, "you're the only girl I'd ever buy anything for," he said softly, smoothing a curl behind my ear and kissing me gently. I flop down ontop of him, flinching slightly when his hands slid up the back of the sweatshirt to hold me tightly.
