Hey it's been months but I'm back since I couldn't get their story out of my head again

May 2004

I'm working a night shift with Allison Uley at the diner. It's a slow night. Not many people are in so I'm mainly just chatting with Allison about Sam and his recent behaviour. "He ran off to the woods again tonight after I asked him if he was still planning to to college next year. He got mad and stormed out. That's the third time this week. I'm getting fed up with that boy. I just wish he'd talk to us" Allison tells me and I nod. "Me too. I'm trying to be a supportive fiancée through all this but he just keeps shutting me out or starting arguments" At this point Allison is aware that me and Sam are engaged. Like my parents, she isn't the happiest about this but just wants us to be happy.

Allison sighs and puts the cash from a customer's bill in the register "Hopefully he'll open up soon" I nod and start clearing a table then the door opens. "Take a seat and I'll be right with you," I tell the person as I finish clearing the booth. I look up and I see it's Oscar Davis. A guy from my school. He's spent most of his life in the system being moved around to different foster families until he ended up here 4 years ago. I think his current foster parents Adam and June are fine as far as I know. He hasn't said otherwise.

Sam hates him but can never give a valid reason as to why. I think Sam is jealous because Oscar has asked me out a few times but I told him no but we're still good friends. He doesn't have many. He is tall. At least 6ft with chin-length black hair, brown eyes, warm, rich skin tone and is always wearing a worn-out leather jacket. He takes a seat and I walk over "Let me guess, you want the bacon cheeseburger without tomatoes, a side of fries and a medium Coke" I tell him his usual order teasingly and he shrugs "Well I doubt yours is much better. Plus I'm needing comfort food" he responds and I nod understanding. "I understand that much. Everything ok?" I ask him while putting his order in with the chef and he smiles unconvincingly "Yeah I'm great" I raise an eyebrow at him and he rolls his eyes "June is pregnant. Miracle child. So they no longer need me as their substitute child and they're sending me back. My social worker has found me another family. Florida this time. At least it'll be sunnier than this shithole. I leave on Sunday" He tells me.

I feel bad for him. He deserves a family. People who love him instead of people who treat him like yesterday's trash. "Oscar I'm so sorry. You don't deserve that" I tell him. Allison suddenly comes over to me. "You're all done for tonight sweetheart. See you again tomorrow?" She asks and I nod while taking my apron off "Same time, same place" I think for a minute then I turn to the chef. "Hey, Matty. Can I get my usual and add it to Table 12's order?" The chef nods then shoo's me away with his hand. He hates being disturbed in his space.

I smile then I go and sit across from Oscar. "Sounds like you need a friend," I tell him and smile a little. "I'll be ok. You get used to it after 16 years. The real question is are you ok? I heard Prince Charming has been doing his Houdini act on you again" He tells me and I roll my eyes "If you're not gonna be nice about my fiancée I'm leaving. He's got a lot going on right now" I warn him and he nods "I'm Sorry. It'll be nice. Wait... fiancée?" He then notices the ring on my finger and I nod. "Yes. He proposed last month" I tell him and he nods "Well congrats" Allison then brings our food over. "Ok. We have the bacon cheeseburger with no tomato, a side of fries and a medium coke for Oscar and the Patty melt with a side of onion rings and a strawberry milkshake for Leah. Can I get you guys anything else?" Allison asks and I shake my head. I think we're good. But thanks Allison" I tell her. She then smiles and walks away and we dig into our food.

We eat in silence which is very unlike Oscar. He's usually never shuts up. I can only imagine how he is feeling right now. He's been with many foster families over the years and now another one is abandoning him like he means nothing. He deserves a loving family. Everyone does.
