Have you seen the Hat Man?
I have.
I woke up in the dead of night. No cause. No sound. No stirring. Only enough to open my eyes and see the shape of a man standing at the foot of my bed. Dim light from the bathroom highlighted his ever so dark form. It was so dark it was as though he absorbed the light itself. He was pitch black. Wearing what looked like a long black coat and a hat.
No features. No movement. He never said a word. Only stared. Watching me, watching him.
Normally, this would strike fear into the heart of anyone who witnessed it. To be so fearful of either someone breaking into your home, or perhaps this was some kind of phantom.
And yet. I felt nothing. It was as if I looked right through him to see my bathroom door and nothing more. I felt no fear or dread. Not even enough to wake my husband for him to see what I was seeing. Nothing.
I don't know how long we stared at each other. It could have been seconds or several minutes. Either way, afterward, I merely closed my eyes and fell back asleep.
In the morning, I thought it was a strange dream I had. I told my husband about it. Just for him to grow pale. That's when he told me he thought he saw the same thing. Not only seeing the same thing, but feeling the same thing. He felt nothing. He was only able to stare back into the non-moving void that stood at the foot of our bed.
This shook both of us. We wondered then if perhaps someone had broken into the home to watch us sleep. Of course, there was no evidence of that.
Next, we wondered if we simply shared a similar dream somehow. We decided to look into it. We searched the internet for the only thing we could think of. A shadow figure with a hat. That's how we found out about the Hat Man.
Apparently, it is a widespread phenomenon. Countless people have seen him. Everyone seems to have a similar experience. Expressing that they wake up in the middle of the night to see him standing within their room, watching them sleep. Not only that, but they also express not feeling afraid. Simply seeing him, accepting that it is a thing that is happening, then drifting back off to their sleep.
There are many questions people have.
"Who is the Hat Man?"
"What is the Hat Man?"
"What does it mean if you see the Hat Man?"
"How can I see the Hat Man?"
"Can the Hat Man hurt me?
"What does the Hat Man want?"There are just as many theories as well.
- He is a shadow person.
- He is a demon.
- He is an alien.
- He visits sleeping people to study them.
- He is a curse.
- He is a protector.
- He is a product of mass hysteria. You'll get a different answer depending on where you look. But looking just makes you have more questions. All we can really determine is what we know. What we know is that people all over the world claim to see the exact same thing with nearly identical experiences.
Therefore, I'm curious.
