Chapter 1

The Beginning of the End

I walk outside my dimly lit room and grab my thin green jacket that hangs near the door against the tan wall. Picking up my shoes from the brown wooden floor, I head over to the couch to sit next to my mother, Charlotte Harper. Me and Charlotte have been living in this complex for as long as I can remember. Recently, however, our rent has gone up, and we're starting to not be able to afford it. So we may have to move out next month.

"Hey, mom"

"Hey hun, where are you heading out to?"

"I told you yesterday, Mom. I'm hanging out with Sarah"

"Oh sorry, I forgot. How has she been?"

"I don't know. We haven't talked much"

As I finish tying my boots, I stand up from the sofa and grab my keys from the messy coffee table, accidentally knocking over an empty wine bottle.

"Be back around seven," she says in a quiet, mundane tone. "I wanna get some shopping done tonight"

"Ok, mom."

As I place the wine bottle back on the coffee table, I walk over to the door and step out. My mom and I don't talk that much. She usually lays at the same spot on the old brown couch and watches the news talk about the president, Jason Leger. While I stand out in the dim hallway, I pull my flip phone out of my pocket and call my friend Sarah Lane.

"Hello?"

"Hey! I just called to see if you're getting close to the complex."

"Yeah, I'm almost there. By the way, I have some exciting news to tell you when we meet up"

I grin

"You can't tell me now?"

"No! It's a surprise. Anyway, I gotta hang up. See you soon!"

I hang up and slide my phone back into my pocket, looking back up, and start to head to the elevator. The hallway was dirty, its dark brown carpet floor had stains on it. Empty food wrappers and plastic cups lay on the floor. Even though there was a trash can near the stairs, the people who lived here didn't care. The lights were dirty and flickered. Some didn't even work. As I approach the elevator, I see a piece of paper that is taped onto the silver doors. Saying that the elevators were out of order. I sigh now, having to walk down the stone stairs. Walk past the small, quiet lobby and out the glass door. I sit down on the steps and look out onto the road. Sarah is one of my oldest friends from high school. We usually hang out a lot, but recently she's been dating this guy named Allen Miller, so we're starting to hang out less. I see her car drive up, and I walk towards it. Getting in and shutting the door. I look at her, seeing she's wearing a new dark blue jacket with dim jeans. Her long blond hair was in a ponytail.

"Hey, Emma. how have you been?"

"Oh, I'm doing good. How about you?"

"I'm doing great."

I fasten my seat belt, still gazing at her.

"So what's this surprise you wanted to tell me?"

Sarah smiles

"Allen preprosed to me!"

I gasp as a smile forms on my face

"Oh my god, congratulations!"

"Thanks!"

We drove through a large populated town. Tall buildings stand high, some with graffiti on them. Birds chirp and flock to their homemade nest, vast amounts of people are walking and talking to one another.
