-"Hey!" I scold Snookie who just bit Max's hand.
-"Argh..." He grimaces and pulls his hand away from my wrist, looking at the bite mark.
-"God I'm SO sorry," I take his hand to check if it's bleeding, "please don't tell me he's not bleeding..." I examine it and thankfully it's not, only a little scar is visible.
-"Vandalism, uncooperative AND irresponsible? Miss Miller, you just dug yourself into a deeper hole, might be your own grave for instance." He retakes both of my wrists and pulls me hard with one hand, then uses his other to grab his handcuffs.
-"Hey you're hurting me!" I let out and tried to let go of his grip, he really was hurting me.
He looks at me and meets my eyes, he takes his hand off my wrist and calms down.
-"My apologies, I didn't mean to hurt you."
-"And I didn't mean to commit vandalism."
He rolled his eyes, his previous frustration returning, almost regretting not crushing my bones.
-"Please, let's cut to the chase, enough is enough." His tone left no room for negotiation.
-"Fine..." I sighed and finally gave up, I seriously needed to act like the responsible adult I was supposed to be. "One question though, am I going to jail?"
He looked straight into my eyes and for some unknown reason, I felt butterflies blooming in my stomach, he took a step away from me since our bodies were so close our temperatures became one.
-"Probably yes, probably no, that depends on what the judge decides."
-"Really?" My eyes widen, "So I was running away for nothing?" I say almost smiling, I was afraid I'd go to jail and lose my mind there with actual criminals, a wave of relief washes over me.
-"This doesn't mean you won't be punished, you're likely to do community service and pay a certain amount for the penalty charge. Vandalism doesn't typically lead to imprisonment, especially for a first-time offender."
-"So I just worsened my situation when I just had to do silly work and pay some money?" I laugh, finding this whole misunderstanding quite funny, though my bank account won't find this funny. But gotta look at the bright side, at least I'm not going to jail.
-"Yeah, so is Missy going to cooperate with Mister Policeman?" He says like he was talking to a child, the fact he called himself 'Mister Policeman' twisted my stomach. And for some reason, I found that hot, so became my cheeks.
-"Yes sure I should just...I better take the dog home, then we can go to the police station and do whatever I gotta do, is that alright? My house is just a few blocks from here."
He rolls his eyes and nods.
-"You better not try running away or I'll make sure you're found behind bars."
-"Okay chill I'm not going anywhere, I promise." I smile and scrunch my nose, I look again at Snookie who's trying to understand what's going on here. "Let's go home Snookie, and I'm not mad at you." I crouch and pat her head, feeling bad for shouting at her earlier, she smiles with her tongue out, making me die to give her a big hug. But Mister Officer is looking, waiting for me to finish and start walking home.
I stand up and lead the way. For about 5 minutes, which seemed like a lifetime, we remained silent, it was too awkward and I couldn't handle loud silence. I desperately tried to find a topic to talk about, wondering if he would even answer me.
-"So...do you usually end up in situations like this?"
-"If by situations like this you mean chasing a girl who doesn't want to hold responsibility for her crimes, mocks the law, makes me question my sanity, and doesn't know how to set boundaries then no, it's my first time." He says nonchalantly, calling me out and making me realize how fucking dumb I am, and how amazing of a story-time it would be to tell my grandkids about.
I nervously laugh and mumble My bad, as much as I want to roast him or banter with him, I know I shouldn't and stop creating bigger problems because it seems like he will not indulge me for one more second.
After a series of overthinking and awkward silence, we finally reached my house.
