THERE WAS ABSOLUTELY NO part of me that wanted to wake up this morning. Elena had to come into my room and force me to get up and get ready. It was dreadful. Could summer start already?
I was still tired, despite being dressed. I grabbed my backpack and followed Elena when Jenna stopped us in the hallway. "Ooh. Do I look adult? As in respectfully parental?"
"Depends where you're going." Elena said.
"Jeremy's parent-teacher conference." Jenna said as she began walking to the mirror. Elena and I trailed after her. She grabbed her hair and made a makeshift up-do with her hands. "Hair up or down?"
"Down." I said.
"Sexy stewardess," Elena said while Jenna still had her hair up. Jenna dropped her hair and fixed it a bit. "Boozy housewife."
"Up it is." Jenna said, her eyes going wide briefly. Elena laughed.
I shrugged. "I think it looks better down."
"You're feisty today." Jenna said to Elena.
"I feel good, which is rare so I've decided to go with it. Fly free, walk on the sunshine and all that stuff." Elena mused. "Where is Jeremy?"
"Oh, he left early. Something about getting to woodshop early to finish a birdhouse." Jenna said as she fixed her hair some more.
Elena and I shared a look, knowing that was a crock of shit.
"There is no woodshop, is there?" Jenna realized after a moment.
We shook our heads. "No," we said quietly.
"Yeah." Jenna used the same tone as us, nodding her head a bit.
Mrs. Johnson was really on my shit-list, if it wasn't already obvious. She was so, so extremely annoying with her high-pitched voice and spiky hair and constant need to be talking. My ears were always damn near bleeding everyday at the end of first period. She was truly a dreadful woman to be in the presence of. It seemed she got more annoying everyday, despite me thinking she was sort of sweet at first. Not to mention, she assigned way too much homework.
That bell ringing was music to my very sore ears.
I really needed to make some friends. I looked kind of like a loser as I walked down the hallway all by myself, every single day. Elena always told me to put myself out there but I just couldn't comprehend how. I wanted a boyfriend or a girlfriend, but every time I thought about that, I got anxious. Never mind my frustrating, unreciprocated crush on Bonnie.
After school was over, Elena came to get me by my locker so we could walk outside together, and then we ran into Matt. That would never not be awkward.
He was telling us about Vicki, as Elena had asked how she was doing. "They're keeping her overnight to make sure there's no infection, but she should be able to come home tomorrow."
